The Imagine – Waterford Art’s Festival 2004 have announced a call for submissions to their short film screenwriting competition, asking screenwriters, storytellers and film fans to write a script based on an original idea from noir crime novelist Raymond Chandler.
The successful screenplay will be produced by the WYD-Eye Film Unit and premiered at the festival in October 2004.
This unusual project stems from Chandler’s close connection with Waterford, where he spent most of his childhood summer holidays at his families holiday home in Cathedral Square. Before he died, he had intended to set his next Philip Marlowe novel in the city.
Organisers have supplied the original plotline and ask screenwriters to follow Chandlers lead...
Marlowe
is visiting Ireland and he stops in Waterford for a few days. He visits a bar
on the quays in Waterford and there he witnesses a fight between sailors from
different ships. The next day he hears that one of the sailors from the fight
has been murdered and the body was found slumped in Sticky Back's doorway (Sticky
Back’s was a bookshop on the quays of Waterford). That evening Marlowe
is recognized by the captain of the murdered sailor's boat and is asked to investigate.
