Netflix has unveiled first-look images and details surrounding the cast and crew of Stay Close; the adaptation of Harlan Coben’s best-selling novel of the same name.

Stay Close follows on from Netflix’s hugely success adaptation of Harlan Coben’s The Stranger in 2020. The production will also see Irish director Daniel O’Hara (Brassic, Doctor Who) reunite with Red Production company to helm the upcoming series alongside co-director Lindy Heymann.

Northern Irish actor James Nesbitt has been cast in a leading role with Richard Armitage returning following his leading role in The Stranger. Other cast includes Cush Jumbo, Sarah Parish, Eddie Izzard, Jo Joyner, Daniel Francis, Bethany Antonia, and Rachel Andrews.

The show follows three people living comfortable lives each conceal dark secrets that even the closest to them would never suspect; Megan (Jumbo), a working mother of three; Ray (Armitage), the once promising documentary photographer, now stuck in a dead-end job pandering to celebrity-obsessed rich kids, and Broome (Nesbitt), a detective who’s unable to let go of a missing person’s cold case. As the past comes back to haunt them, threatening to ruin their lives and the lives of those around them, what will be their next move?

Written by David Danny Brocklehurst (BrassicCome Home) Mick Ford, Victoria Asare-Archer, and Charlotte Coben, Stay Closewill release on December 31st and consist of 8x45min episode format.

Daniel O’Hara also features as executive producer on the series alongside creator Harlan Coben, Nicola Shindler (It’s A SinFinding AliceHappy Valley), Richard Fee, and Danny Brocklehurst.

“It’s very exciting to be unleashing another Harlan Coben adaptation on the Netflix audience!” O’Hara told IFTN. “Stay Close was an epic shoot, especially in a year affected by Covid. We had an incredible cast, an amazing crew and we shot in some fantastic locations. It’s very exciting to be releasing another twisty Harlan Coben adaptation to the worldwide Netflix audience. We’re putting the final touches to the closing episodes as we speak!”

Coben has a five-year deal with Netflix, which will see 14 of his novels turned into film and TV shows.

“I am so happy and excited to Stay Close (pun intended) to the same team that made The Stranger, Safe, and The Five,” said creator Harlan Coben. “And talk about a dream-come-true cast – Cush Jumbo, an incendiary and awesome talent; Jimmy Nesbitt, a legendary actor I always wanted to collaborate with; and wow, Richard Armitage back again!”

O’Hara has directed television projects for a wide range of international broadcasters and content providers, including Netflix, BBC, Sky, RTÉ, and TG4, on shows including Harlan Coben’s The Stranger, Brassic, Doctor Who and Being Human. He first came to prominence with his critically acclaimed short films, Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom (2003) and Fluent Dysphasia (2004), which have won a combined total of 25 awards at international film festivals.

Stay Close will release on December 31st.
