12 Nov 2019 : News Desk
Veteran filmmaker Alan Gilsenan.
Acclaimed Irish filmmaker Alan Gilsenan will discuss his career to date in a keynote conversation conducted by Pat Collins at the Cork Film Festival's annual documentary-focused Industry Day.

In partnership with Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann, Doc Day at Ireland’s first and largest film festival this Friday, 15 November, provides a focus on high-quality Irish and international documentary cinema, bringing together film sector professionals to develop understanding and opportunities in the cinematic documentary landscape.

Industry Days, taking place at Republic of Work, South Mall, also feature First Take, a development event for emerging and newly established filmmakers on Thursday, 14 November; and Focus: Filmmaker Forum, roundtable discussions guiding attendees through the entire process of making a feature on Saturday, 16 November. Industry Days feature as part of the 64th Cork Film Festival, running until Sunday, 17 November.

Doc Day will include Documentary Funding Opportunities in Ireland, followed by Distributing Docs | Managing Festival, Theatrical and VOD with speakers Robert Beeson, Managing Director with New Wave Films; Gillian Cooper, Distribution Executive with Wildcard Distribution; Marcel Karst, Head of Theatrical Sales at Dogwoof; and Avalon Lyndon, Director of Theatrical Marketing at MUBI. A panel of respected documentary filmmakers — Adrian Duncan, Co-Director of Floating Structures; Cara Holmes, Director of Welcome To A Bright White Limbo and Mia Mullarkey, Director of Mother & Baby — will discuss The Art of the Short Doc, marking the introduction of the Festival’s third Academy Award®-qualifying award in 2019, the Grand Prix Documentary Short Award.

For Working with the Archives, leading documentary directors and producers — Dermot Lavery, Co-Director of Lost Lives and Kyle Martin, Producer of Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project; along with Archive Producers Clare Stronge and Miriam Walsh, will reflect on their experiences working with archives and legal concerns. Doc Day is followed by Documentary Gala, The Cave, directed by Feras Fayyad.

Festival Director and CEO Fiona Clark said:

“Our well-established Industry Days offer invaluable opportunities for filmmakers at all stages of their career to connect and explore opportunities to develop cinematic documentary in Ireland. We are delighted to have one of Ireland's foremost filmmakers, Alan Gilsenan, Arts Council and UCC Film Artist in Residence 2019-20, at our renowned Doc Day to discuss his career to date in conversation with acclaimed filmmaker Pat Collins. Both informative and inspiring, this public interview will focus on Alan’s lauded work in documentary film, including the seminal Irish documentaries, The Road to God Knows Where (1988), The Yellow Bittern (2009), and Meetings with Ivor (2017).”

For First Take, supported by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and Screen Skills Ireland, there will be a notable discussion on 50/50 by 2020 - The Quest for Gender Parity, led by Diane Henderson, Deputy Artistic Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival; Dr Susan Liddy, Chair of Women in Film & Television Ireland and Anna Bogutskaya, Festival Director at Underwire Festival. As one of the first Irish signatories of the ground-breaking Cannes gender equality charter, Cork Film Festival is delighted to present this important discussion, which will focus on the main challenges to enacting the 5050×2020 Gender Parity and Inclusion Pledge.

First Take will also include sessions such as Exploring Script Development, presented by Chelsea Morgan Hoffmann, Development Producer at Element Pictures Group; and Demystifying Sales & Distribution with speakers Síle Culley, Distribution and Audiences Consultant; Kyle Entwistle, Theatrical Sales Manager at Curzon Artificial Eye; Marie Tarascan of the Festival Agency; and Patrick O’Neill, Managing Director at Wildcard Distribution. For the Irish Feature Film Case Study, writer and director Aoife Crehan and producers Pippa Cross and Paul Donovan of Irish feature The Last Right, will discuss taking the film from script to screen in conversation with Dearbhla Regan, Project Manager with Screen Ireland. The Cork Film Festival and Film Network Ireland Speed Networking Event at the Festival Club, The Cellar Theatre will conclude First Take.

Focus: Filmmaker Forum, presented in partnership with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, will feature five 15-minute sessions, where key Irish and international film industry players take questions on making the transition from short to feature filmmaking, and how to efficiently produce film.
