Tile Films Produce First Fully Immersive Cinematic VR with Children's Drama 'Faoladh'
17 Oct 2018 : Nathan Griffin
In collaboration with Google VR and the V-Sense Project Trinity College, Tile Films have created Ireland's first live action VR film.

Centred around Celtic legends and Viking invasions in fully immersive cinematic VR, ‘Faolach’ is currently screening at Ithaca Fantastik New York and is available now on RTE.ie/360

Set in ancient Ireland, Faoladh follows the perilous journey of a 9th century Irish child who's village is attacked by Viking raiders and you, the viewer, will play the role of a wolf like guardian spirit that must guide him to safety.

Speaking about the project, Director Declan Dowling told IFTN:

"I always knew it would be a challenge filming drama in VR. Besides obvious restrictions in storytelling and the huge technical feat involved in filming with a 16 camera gopro odyssey, it's also an extremely nascent film format and as a result very hard to find support for. But with collaboration and an amazing production team we managed to shoot the entire film last year and I look forward to what new challenges immersive storytelling will bring in the future."

Executive Producer Stephen Rooke added:

"This is the first stereoscopic VR drama film that Tile Films has undertaken to make, so it was great working with Declan the director as he has a VFX background. Filming was certainly a learning curve for all the cast and crew involved, having to think visually in 360 degrees all the time when shooting. We have to thank Google VR for supplying the odyssey camera and V-Sense Project Trinity College for their support with post production. This has been a really exciting project for all involved."

The film also formed part of a research paper and will be shown at the International Conference for Interactive Digital Storytelling Trinity College this December. (Click here for more information)
