RTÉ License Quiz Show Format ‘Play It By Year’ to German Broadcaster Das Erste

The ‘Play It By Year’ game show hosted by Mike Murphy originally premiered on RTÉ One on December 27th 2015
RTÉ announce they have brokered a deal with German channel Das Erste for a 10 pilot episode commission of ‘Play It By Year’. A family entertainment quiz show format originally created by Adare Productions in conjunction with RTÉ.

The German version which will be called ‘So War’s! Das Quiz Der Jahrzehnte’. Ir is scheduled to air this summer on the public broadcaster Das Erste, which is part of the ARD network of public channels. It will be produced by Constantin Entertainment.

“We couldn’t have hoped for a better start to Play It By Year’sinternational career than a format deal with a major broadcaster in Germany, Europe’s biggest and most competitive TV market. I hope German viewers derive as much pleasure from this classic family show as did our audiences in Ireland. It’s the perfect format in that everybody, everywhere has memories that make them laugh, cry and cheer,” said RTÉ's head of comedy, talent development and music Eddie Doyle in a statement.

The ‘Play It By Year’ game show originally premiered on RTÉ One December 27th 2015 and was hosted by Mike Murphy, It was broadcast for four consecutive episodes over the festive period and it achieved a consolidated average audience of 351,000 and a share of 22.6%.. 

The quiz show format sees three teams each consisting of three members go head to head in a test of memory, teamwork and general knowledge, answering questions based on archive footage.

The show looks at the celebrities, politics, sporting moments, quirky events and bizarre happenings of the last 35 years as team members dust down their memories and battle it out over nine nostalgic rounds to win a big holiday trip away.

‘Play It By Year’ was created by award-winning Adare Productions in conjunction with RTÉ. It was originally commissioned by Eddie Doyle, head of comedy, talent development and music at RTÉ and premiered on RTÉ One in December 2015.

The German deal was brokered by RTÉ programme sales executive Laura Stearn.
