TG4 is a national television channel. The daily Irish language programme schedule is its core service: over five hours of innovative quality programming in Irish supported by a wide range of material in other languages. Over 730,000 viewers tune into the channel each day.

TG4 invests over £12m annually in original programming from the independent production sector in Ireland. This investment supports 350 posts in small private sector companies throughout the island. TG4 is the most positive and high-profile Government policy for the Irish language for the past fifty years. The project has received the support of all parties and Governments since 1992.

TG4 provides 16 hours a day of television from current Exchequer funding of the order of £16m per annum. TG4 also sells commercial air-time and programme sponsorship.

TG4 is a public service broadcaster. It carries live coverage of key parts of the proceedings of Dáil Éireann. TG4 was established and operates under the statutory umbrella of RTÉ. TG4 receives a programme supply of 360 hours of programming annually from RTÉ, at no cost to TG4. TG4 has premiere exclusive live tv rights for a number of top GAA and other sports competitions 2001-2003, including the TG4 Ladies Gaelic Football Championships and the Celtic League in Rugby Union.
