The Dearg Films documentary on the life and career of Brendan Grace - ‘Brendan Grace - Funny Man’ pulled in huge viewing figures last Monday night and proved to be a huge hit with both audiences and critics.

The documentary, which aired on Monday 8th October at 21:35 on RTE One, had an audience of 420,000 viewers with a reach of 36%. Viewers warmed to Grace’s open and honest approach to his life and work in the documentary and took to social media to praise his comedy and his devotion to his family.

#BrendanGrace trended in the top five in Ireland throughout the evening and into the following morning.

Speaking about the figures, producer and director Brian Reddin told IFTN:

“We watched the documentary going out live last Monday night in the company of Brendan and his family and friends, many of whom were in the documentary. As soon as it ended and we turned our phones on, the room started dinging like a row of pinball machines with congratulations and messages of goodwill flooding in. I was relieved because I knew it had gone down well, but I had no idea we’d pull in figures like that. When I saw 420,000, I was blown away and just as delighted with the brilliant reviews in the Sundays. Thank you to everyone who watched and thank you for all the kind messages since it went out. I’m thrilled and delighted for Brendan.”

Brendan Grace added:

“I’m overwhelmed by the reaction that has come from everybody about the documentary. I feel very emotional and happy looking back over the film and to see the contributions of my lovely wife Eileen and family, who have been so supportive of me over all these years, makes me feel very proud. I’ve been inundated with messages about the documentary, including people in America who have seen it. I’m humbled by the reaction and glad I lived up to peoples’ expectations of me.”

‘Brendan Grace – Funny Man’ is available to view on the RTÉ Player.
