Canada has officially become part of Eurimages, making it the first non-European country to enter the European Council’s co-production fund, with Telefilm Canada as its lead representative.

This allows Canadian producers to access the European Support Fund, which is shared with other member countries, and allocates €25M annually to projects for co-production, distribution and exhibition.

Catherine Trautmann, Fund President:
“Canada’s accession marks a new step for Eurimages and will serve to deepen the ties which already exist between the European and Canadian film industries. It will bring new opportunities for producers on both sides of the Atlantic in a sector that increasingly works on a global scale. We are convinced that it will foster innovative creative partnerships and look forward to working with our Canadian counterparts.”

Ireland’s thriving film industry has benefited extensively in recent years from the advantages presented by international co-production with Canada and others, which extend to distribution, locations, widening pools of creative talent and financial incentives.

Each of the above greatly accelerate the rates of production on Irish projects, including those whose international acclaim has worked toward public support in Ireland for increasing funding for independent filmmakers at the beginning of their careers.

Such projects include Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’, which earned a total of four Oscar nominations in 2016, for Best Film, Directing and Screenplay and Best Actress for Brie Larson who was honoured with the award in her category. ‘Room’ was produced by Ed Guiney of Element Pictures and Canadian producer David Gross with funding from Telefilm Canada, the Irish Film Board and Others.

John Crowley’s ‘Brooklyn’, which was nominated for a further three Oscars for Best Film, Actress in a Leading Role and Adapted Screenplay is also an Irish-Canadian co-production, produced by Fiona Dwyer and Amanda Posey of Wildgaze Films. It also received funding from Irish Film Board, the BAI, RTÉ, BBC, Telefilm and the BFI.

Internationally acclaimed World 2000 series ‘Vikings’ stars Travis Fimmel, Alexander Ludwig and Katheryn Winnick is filmed in Co. Wicklow and is another example. It was originally developed by Octagon Pictures in Ireland and Take 5 Productions in Canada, with additional funding from the Irish Film Board. It generated €20M revenue in Ireland after its first season alone and recently wrapped filming the fifth.

The upcoming ‘The Breadwinner’ from Oscar-nominated Irish studio Cartoon Saloon is currently in production, and is a co-production between Aircraft Pictures Canada, Luxembourg’s Melesine Productions and Cartoon Saloon in association with Angelina Jolie’s Jolie Pas Productions. Funding comes from the Irish Film Board, the BAI and RTÉ in Ireland.

The co-production scene between our countries has become increasingly active in the past twelve months, as bodies on both sides moved to improve the conditions of collaboration. This includes the €150k Development Incentive announced by the Broadcast Authority of Ireland (BAI) and Canada Media Fund (CMF) in April, followed by the updates to the Audiovisual Co-production Treaty between Ireland and Canada replace the original 1989 treaty in July.

Heather Humphreys, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht:
“Co-production is increasingly becoming the norm and treaties such as this one are very important for enabling international film productions. Ireland and Canada already have a strong co-production tradition, with over 30 feature films and TV dramas produced in the last ten years under the 1989 Treaty.”

The following December the 2015-2016 Telefilm Canada Report praised the success of productions such as ‘Room’ and ‘Brooklyn’, also noting the additional opportunities afforded to producers in both countries by the renewed treaty, highlighting the freedom it presents to respond to new technologies and practices.

Canadian producers are invited to submit eligible co-production projects for consideration to the European Council, with respective deadlines of April 20th, August 24th, and October 24th.
