Peter Foott’s ‘The Young Offenders’ exceeds €500K at Irish Box Office
27 Sep 2016 : Katie McNeice
Following its release to Irish cinemas on Friday, September 16th this year, the hilarious feature debut from Peter Foott has achieved a 19% increase in its second weekend.

The Cork-based comedy achieved the highest opening for an Irish film at the Irish Box Office this year and will continue to screen to cinemas nationwide this week.

‘The Young Offenders’ showcases new Irish talents Chris Walley and Alex Murphy in lead roles as the hapless teenagers Conor and Jock, who decide to take a 160km bike trip to Co. Cork in the hope of finding cocaine which has supposedly washed up on a local beach.

Director Peter Foott noted the real-life €440 million cocaine seizure in the county in 2007, the biggest Ireland has ever seen, was the inspiration behind the film. At a recent IFTA Screening and Q&A on the film, he continued:

“There were idiots, everyday people like all of us, off looking for cocaine! The idea of fifteen year olds going down was even more ridiculous…‘The Goonies’ and ‘Stand by Me’ are my favourite films and I thought that age group would be a great audience to talk to.”

‘The Young Offenders’ enjoyed its international premiere at the Fantastic Fest in Austin last Friday, and is set to compete against five other titles for the Comedy Feature Jury Prize. These include Maren Ade’s ‘Toni Erdmann’, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Its upcoming screening at the BFI London Film Festival, which runs from October 5th-16th, will mark its UK premiere, and will be attended by the filmmakers and cast.

Los Angeles-based XYZ Films will represent The Young Offenders for North American sales. The project is distributed in Ireland by Wildcard Distribution.
