The project chronicles the adventures of Dublin man Jack Kavanagh, who travels to the west coast of America with friends, despite becoming paralysed in a swimming accident in 2012.
Kavanagh was a first year student in Trinity College Dublin when the accident occurred in Portugal. ‘Breaking Boundaries’ shows his perseverance since the accident, showcasing his inspiring story.
His travelling includes skydiving, camping and hanging out with U2 in honour of a pact Kavanagh made with his friend David Henry—to go on the trip of a lifetime together, returning with stories which would inspire their grandchildren.
Throughout the documentary, there are parallel highs and lows as Kavanagh fulfills his promise but is also reminded of the permanence of his situation.
Speaking about his experience, he states:
“We learnt a lot about ourselves on the trip, but more importantly it was the end of one chapter and the beginning of something very new. When we came home from America, all of us were inspired because we had shown that we could achieve anything. Obstacles no longer seem like obstacles and I am embracing even more challenges because I began to relish that uncomfortable place in which you exist when you are challenged - developing, adapting and overcoming. This journey was important to me… It proved to me that I could achieve anything in my life.”
