CAO: Eye on DKIT
27 Jan 2016 : Seán Brosnan
With the CAO deadline looming (February 1st), IFTN has scoured some of the film and television courses Ireland has to offer for prospective students.

Here, we talk to Lorcan Dunne of DKIT to discuss what his college has to offer.

What film and television courses do you have in the CAO?

At DKIT, we offer a newly redesigned BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production.

Recognising the continued need for high-functioning generalists in the screen media industries, this degree was redeveloped (from the former BA in Video & Film Production) in 2014 to ensure it remained to the forefront of technology-driven trends within the film and television industries.

What do you think makes your college unique for prospective students?

Based in the newly renovated PJ Carrolls building on the DKIT campus and equipped with a full 4K TV Studio, a screening room, multiple edit suites, a video editing lab, multimedia labs, a radio studio, a dark room, a green screen studio & equipment borrowing office, students are trained on key software packages used in the film & TV industry, including Pro-Tools, Avid Media Composer, Premier Pro, After Effects, Photoshop amongst many more. Students in the 3rd and 4th year of the programme also have the opportunity to compete for the Annual John Moore Film Award. A Dundalk native, Director John Moore began his relationship with DKIT and the Section of Creative Media in 2011. Access to film and television industry professionals is a core feature of the programme & lecturers continually invite Industry Professionals to deliver masterclasses and guest lectures. A certain amount of course content in specialised areas is also delivered by industry professionals such as renowned film directors, cinematographers and producers.

How do you prepare students for working in the industry?

This course is over 60 percent practical and industry focused. Lecturers have close ties to industry and identify new media trends such as virtual reality, streaming, interactive content etc.

Graduates of this programme are recognised as being uniquely situated to work in the film and television industries in Ireland and abroad and have found work in companies such as Big Mountain Productions, One Productions, Vision Independent Productions, Click Media, Egg Post-Production, Setanta Sports and Tailored Films.
