First Irish western ‘An Klondike’ screens to full house at special IFTA screening
04 Sep 2015 : Seán Brosnan
‘An Klondike’ will begin airing as a four part series on TG4 on September 8th
Ireland’s first ever western ‘An Klondike’ screened to a full house and a very positive reception at a special IFTA screening at the Odeon Cinema in the Point Village on September 1st.

The screening was followed by a lively panel discussion with director Dathaí Keane, producer Pierce Boyce, and cast members Owen McDonnell, Dara Devaney and Sean T O’Meallaigh. Produced by Galway-based company Abú Media – ‘An Klondike’ was financed by BAI, TG4 and Section 481 and again displays TG4’s skill for commissioning original and engaging Irish language drama on a small budget.

Audience members at the IFTA screening particularly singled out the three lead performances of Owen McDonnell, Dara Devaney and Sean T O’Meallaigh as a highlight, as well as Dathaí Keane’s direction, Padraig O Neill’s production design and Colm Hogan’s cinematography.

‘An Klondike’ tells the story of the Connolly’s — three Irish brothers who journey from the silver mines of Montana to the Klondike Valley in the hope of striking it rich. They seek their fortune in Dominion Creek, a town built on greed, where the Connolly’s become embroiled in a deadly feud with Jacob Hopkins, the man who runs Dominion. When Séamus Connolly shoots Jacob’s son in a duel, Jacob vows revenge.

The film has so far screened as the closing film at the Galway Film Fleadh, as well as beginning a cinema release last week in the Eye Cinema in Galway.

Donald Clarke writing for The Irish Times after the film’s cinema release was quick to commend the ambition of the film and called it “the most improbable film of the month – in a good way”. He also stated that the praise western feature film ‘Slow West’ (starring Michael Fassbender) received for turning New Zealand into the Wild West on a much larger budget should pale in comparison to what Dathaí and production designer Padraig O’Neill achieved with ‘An Klondike’ – turning modern day Galway into the rough and desolate Yukon region of 1897 on a much smaller budget.

For the production, the mining town of Dominion Creek was constructed on the grounds of the Glengowla mines outside Oughterard in Co. Galway. Production Designer O’Neill and his team spent months researching and designing each building that makes up the town.

The Galway Advertiser also hailed the film, singling out the three lead performances as well as Colm Hogan’s cinematography. They called the film “gorgeous” stating that the “Galway countryside does a wonderful impression of Alaska and is shot so well the film is a wonderful reminder of how beautiful our county is.”

‘An Klondike’ will air as a four part series beginning on TG4 on Tuesday, September 8th. Stay tuned to IFTN for interviews with director Dathaí Keane and lead actors Dara Devaney, Owen McDonnell and Sean T O’Meallaigh.
