The Creative Media Section in DKIT has announced the launch of its new three-year Level 7 degree programme entitled BA in Theatre & Film Practice, a unique programme not offered anywhere else on the island of Ireland.

This programme replaces the current three-year Level 7 BA in Performing Arts and broadens the focus of the theatre content of the former degree (beyond that of acting) to build on the existing strong links developed between the BA in Performing Arts and the BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production, due to the ongoing successful collaboration between these two programmes over the years.

The programme will provide a solid grounding in the practical application of both theatre and film production skills, a mix of which are currently unavailable to prospective students on the island of Ireland at this level, along with key acting skills and a theoretical foundation.

It will diversify the skills of potential performing arts students by allowing them to develop skills not only in voice, acting and movement, but also in film studies and film production & post-production.

Uniquely, this programme will also allow students the opportunity to gain core skills in technical theatre practice, including set design and construction, sound and lighting design, costume design and stage management. They will also practice promotion, administration and management skills in their third year projects.

Edwina Forkin, a Film Producer with Zanzibar Films in Dublin (http://zanzibarfilms.net) who also has a background in Theatre and was a member of the external expert panel that approved the programme, has stated that it is ‘a very exciting new departure to merge the strengths and merits of Theatre & Film Practice. I think it is a fresh and exciting course and it is incredibly practical for any student or person wanting to work in the business... It will deliver a more comprehensive all round education in this Practice.’

The current BA in Performing Arts is in its final year as it is being replaced by this new programme. However, it has produced a very successful group of graduates since its inception and one key feature of the programme was the access the students had to Industry Professionals – something that will continue with the new programme.

Theatre & Film Writer/Director Marc-Ivan O'Gorman ( https://ie.linkedin.com/in/marcivan) is the latest Industry Professional to deliver an intensive module in the Creative Media Section in DKIT.

Fresh from teaching in the New York Film Academy in LA (to learn more about the New York Film Academy in LA click here), Marc-Ivan started working with final year students on the BA in Performing Arts in early February 2015 on a module that mirrors a real-world acting experience, whereby students work full-time with a director over a period of five weeks in order to put on a professional performance in the final week.

The resulting performance was 'Mouths Making Water', adapted & directed by O’ Gorman from James Joyce's 'Finnegans Wake', which was performed by the students over three nights in early March in the MacAnna Theatre on the DKIT campus. The production consisted of compelling scenes and dreamlike images from the book - which in Joyce's own words, attempts to "reconstruct the nocturnal life" and to "experiment in interpreting 'the dark night of the soul'.

For more information on the new BA in Theatre & Film Practice, see www.dkit.ie/theatrefilm and/or contact the Programme Director Mark Fearon at mark.fearon@dkit.ie.

Students who have applied via the CAO for entry into the former BA in Performing Arts programme have all been contacted by DKIT to advise them to use the CAO Change of Mind facility to change their application to this new programme. This free facility is open from 12 noon on 5th May 2015 to 5.15pm on July 1st 2015 at www.cao.ie or alternatively by using the Change of Mind Form, which is posted to all CAO applicants in May.

All other interested students who would like to apply for this new programme are also reminded that they can use this facility and there is no fee.

There is no audition process for the new BA in Theatre & Film Practice.
