01 Apr 2015 : Seán Brosnan
2015 Annual Conference of CIRCOM will take place from May 20th-22nd 2015
Preparations are underway as Ireland prepares to welcome representatives from broadcasters all across Europe for the 2015 Annual Conference of CIRCOM (the European Association of Regional Television), hosted by RTÉ in partnership with Dundalk Institute of Technology.

This will be the first time that the conference has been held in Ireland, and approximately 200 delegates are expected to travel to Dundalk for the three-day event from May 20th-22nd 2015.

The theme of the conference is ‘Challenge. Regions. Future.’ and during the three-day event attendees will examine the changing face of both journalism and broadcasting along with the challenges faced by regional media outlets across Europe. Sessions will include ‘Mind Your Language? Pressures and challenges of minority languages and possible solutions from technology advances’ and ‘Social Media: Making Us or Breaking Us?’, amongst others.

Speakers

The 33rd Annual conference will see broadcasters from across Europe, including; the BBC, FTV France, ROOS Netherlands, STV Slovenia, MTVA Hungary, RAI Italy, TVP Poland and NRK Norway, attending along with delegates from RTÉ and TG4.

The line-up of speakers includes Mark Little, the founder of Storyful, who will address the relationship between social media and broadcasters. He will be joined by Annewil Neervens, a journalist and digital native from the Netherlands, who will outline the challenge of changing old-school journalists into multi-media communicators.

The increasing diversity of consumer choice concerns all broadcasters and will be analysed by Anders Erlandsson of Ericsson's Consumer Lab. Using Ericsson’s data, gathered from a worldwide survey of 100,000 consumers, he will address the big questions in everyone’s mind: Who is Watching, Who will be Watching, and How?

NRK in Norway will share their experience of drones in a session led by Glen Mulcahy from RTÉ, focussing on Drone Journalism (DroJo) - "Does DroJo have a future in news-gathering?”

Christina Ĺgren from Sweden will detail how new technologies in the SVT TV newsroom has meant a role-change for journalists, a transformation of news-gathering as well as increased output.

The recent recession and its implications for Public Service Broadcasters will be examined by RTÉ and Goran Radman, Director-General of HRT Croatia. Both will outline the cost to their companies of surviving the recession and the lessons to be learned from this experience.

Other conference speakers will include the Emmy Award-winning producer Philip King, who will showcase how music can significantly increase youth audiences across all platforms while the challenge of minority languages will be addressed with speakers from Friesland, Romania, Italy and Ireland.

Awards

The conference will also host the Prix CIRCOM Gala Awards (the ‘Oscars’ of European Regional Television), which honour the best European regional productions in the genres of documentary, video journalism, investigative journalism, Rising Star, minorities in society, Most Original, music, magazine and news magazine. There will also be a Grand Prix award for the “Best of the Best" of the above categories. Irish culture and music will feature prominently throughout the award ceremony in An Táin Arts Centre. The event will be streamed live on the CIRCOM website on Thursday evening May 21st.

The conference sessions will take place on the campus of Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) in their Creative Media Dept purpose-built media facilities of the Carrolls building, with events also taking place locally in the Oriel Centre, Dundalk Gaol, An Táin Arts Centre and the Guinness Storehouse, Dublin.

The hosting of the CIRCOM conference on the DkIT campus marks another important milestone in the relationship between RTÉ and the Institute. RTÉ’s representative on CIRCOM, Michael Lally, said: ‘RTÉ and DkIT are building upon their current working relationship, which has already seen the Dundalk RTÉ Regional Studio moving onto the campus. We hope the conference will showcase the local area as well as bring an economic boost to the region. Our broadcasting colleagues from across Europe are already very impressed at what they have experienced and are looking forward to visiting Dundalk for a productive and informative conference this year. From surviving the economic recession in Ireland and Croatia to radical news-gathering approaches in Sweden, the 33rd annual CIRCOM conference promises to be one of the most challenging and fruitful yet.’

Head of Creative Media at DkIT, Sarah McCann, said: ‘Co-hosting this conference with RTÉ marks a huge milestone in the development of Creative Media as a core discipline area within DKIT and in our developing partnership with RTÉ. We hope to continue this cross collaboration with our national broadcaster in other areas such as content and training initiatives and future professional practice course development and delivery.’

The 2015 Annual Conference of CIRCOM (the European Association of Regional Television), hosted by RTÉ in partnership with Dundalk Institute of Technology will take place on the Dundalk campus from May 20th-22nd 2015.
