‘Moone Boy’ wins Best Sitcom at the British Comedy Awards
17 Dec 2014 : Seán Brosnan
Irish comedy ‘Moone Boy’ won Best Sitcom at the 2014 British Comedy Awards last night, while there were also awards for Irish performers Brendan O’ Carroll, Graham Norton, Aisling Bea - and for Arthur Matthews new show ‘Toast of London’.

The British Comedy Awards, the premier accolade for all comedy programmes, performers and producers across the UK television industry since 1990, awarded ‘Moone Boy’ its coveted Best Sitcom Award, capping off an impressive year for the Chris O’ Dowd led show.

2014 has seen the International Emmy-winning sitcom (co-created by Nick Vincent Murphy) getting the green light for a US adaptation – as broadcaster ABC has ordered a put pilot for the series – with Chris O’ Dowd expected to write and executively produce but not star. The third season of the comedy is expected to air in March 2015 while there are also plans for a future feature film.

Another nominee in the Best Sitcom category was ‘Toast of London’ – which was co-created and written by Arthur Matthews, who has previously created critically acclaimed comedies such as ‘Father Ted’ and ‘The IT Crowd’. Matthews did not leave the award show empty handed however as ‘Toast of London’ was awarded with the Best New Comedy award.

In other Irish news, Brendan O Carroll won the Writers Guild of Great Britain award for scripting ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’. The show was produced also as a feature film this year with ‘Mrs Browns’ Boys D’Movie’ breaking box office records during its opening three days in June of this year. ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’ will return to Irish screens on Christmas Day with a special due to air on RTÉ One at 10pm.

Irish comedian and presenter Graham Norton (‘Father Ted’) won the award for Best Comedy Entertainment Personality while Aisling Bea (‘Fair City’) won for Best Female TV Comic for her work in ‘8 Out of 10 Cats’.

The British Comedy Awards will air on Channel 4 on Wednesday, December 17th at 9pm.
