TG4 Launches Nationwide Broadcasting in the USA
18 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
‘Today's Ireland’ - the public service, educational and free to air channel that broadcasts in the United States has commenced broadcasting Irish language content from TG4 – the award-winning Irish language television station.

MHz Networks launched ‘Today’s Ireland’ on St Patrick’s Day 2013 with unedited and unfiltered television and film content from the island of Ireland, North and South. The project has been endorsed by the Irish Government and by a wide range of political, cultural and media outlets on both sides of the Atlantic. Its target audience is the established internationally-minded American audience of MHz Networks (38 million US households and viewers on multiple national digital platforms) and the 40 million Scots-Irish-American diaspora throughout the US.

The initial TG4 offering on ‘Today’s Ireland’ will showcase some of the Irish language channel’s most popular talk, news magazine and traditional singing content and from August will also include the channel’s acclaimed coverage of the TG4 Ladies Football Championships for which the channel is both broadcast rights holder and competition sponsor.

Pádhraic Ó Ciardha, TG4 Deputy CEO, says this is a very welcome development for his channel: “Irish has long been spoken in the United States, but the many thousands of people in the USA who are fluent in Irish have not had access to a TV channel that has a regular and ongoing schedule of Irish language content. We know that there is a significant demand for TV content in Irish among the many users of Irish right across that country. We are delighted to be able to bring some of our top programmes to a TV audience in the States to complement the global access to TG4 on our own Player www.tg4.tv. Giving our US audience a TV experience of TG4 content will, we believe, result in a very positive feedback.”

Fred Thomas, Founder & President of MHz Networks USA, stated “The Irish language programming supplied by TG4 television really adds to the authenticity and uniqueness of ‘Today’s Ireland’ television. Native Irish speakers in the US, and Irish-Americans, will now have an added easy way to reinforce their cultural heritage and Irish language skills by tuning in to ‘Today’s Ireland’. English speakers in our nationwide audience will follow TG4’s superb professional TV content through sub-titling.”

Viewers can watch TG4 programming in the Washington, D.C. metro area on MHz Networks 1: digital broadcast channel 30.1, Comcast 271, Cox 470, Verizon FiOS 451,RCN 30, Dish Network 8077 and DirecTV 56/2183. The details for D.C. distribution are here.
