Christmas Shorts Required for RTÉjr
15 May 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
RTÉ Young Peoples Programmes wishes to commission a series of Christmas shorts films which will be broadcast throughout the RTÉjr schedule during the two week period around Christmas. 16 x 2'00" (or as agreed with Commissioning Team) are required with a total budget of €45,000.

The shorts will be targeted at an under 7s audience and should embrace their world in the run up to and during Christmas, reflecting the nicer aspects of the winter holiday season, as well as the fun, excitement and joy of the season.

They should not specifically relate to the Christian festival or events particular to Christmas. They should portray, instead, the cross-community, cross-culture celebration of children at Christmas time, the enjoyment of winter activities and family time. The series can feature children from a broad regional spread or select one community to focus on.

Producers are free to suggest themes or a concept that will be central to the series of short films. The films should all feature the target audience though adults may be part of a film. They are intended to be based in location with the theme of activity. However, all ideas will be considered.

It is intended that the short films will be stand-alone and strong enough to have multiple views as they will be repeated regularly across the two week schedule. Young peoples’ presenters should not feature in the series.

Previous successful commissions include ‘Made With Love’ (2013), in which children made and presented a gift to somebody who had done something nice for them during the year by way of saying thank you, and ‘Christmas Tales’ (2012) in which children recounted stories of their favourite Christmas memories.

The deadline for delivery of 16 x 2 minute short films to RTÉ is Friday 5th December 2014.

Submissions should demonstrate the following:

  • An understanding of RTÉ’s Young Peoples Programmes and its target audience
  • A demonstrated appreciation and understanding of the brief, as outlined above
  • A proven track record in the production of programmes for children
  • Strong production talent capable of delivering the proposal as required
  • That the proposal is realisable with reference to budget, time-scale and other key elements

Producers need to submit ideas into RTÉ’s eCommissioning system here under the programme category Young Peoples “Christmas Shorts RTÉjr 2014”.

Interested companies should submit a proposal which includes concept, narrative outline, treatment, indication of talent and budget by the strict deadline of 5pm Friday 6th June 2014.
