UTV Steps Up Public Service Bid
12 May 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
UTV Ireland is proceeding with its goal to be designated a public service broadcaster. The channel is also pushing ahead to secure a higher place on Sky, Saorview and UPC electronic programming guides. The company recently hired David McMunn, a former Head of Regulatory Affairs at TV3 who will act as UTV’s Head of Legal and Compliance, among other recruits.

TV3 has argued to department of communications officials that the new channel’s limited original programming means it should not be designated public service. UTV Ireland is affirming its place through McCann.

As a former TV3 director who left the station before UTV announced the new Irish channel, McMunn will play a key role in making sure UTV Ireland leverages public service content to allow the channel to gain higher prominence on Sky and other platforms. McCann has stated that UTV Ireland’s hour of news at night alone to should be enough to see the channel deemed a public service.

McCann has also expressed compliance with Saorview’s fees of €1m for carriage, a charge which TV3 and other stations have previously criticised. McCann has said, “We want to be on Saorview and I think Saorview wants us.” McCann also said that UTV Ireland did not “micro manage” its radio station in the republic, and would continue this policy in television.

For UTV Ireland’s commercial team, McCann has stated “We’re unashamedly trying to attract the very best people in Ireland”. Confirmed recruits include Daragh Byrne, currently Director of Sales at TV3, as Commercial Director. Joanne King, who manages the TV3 sales portfolio at Setanta Sports, has been appointed Direct Sales Manager for UTV.

Paula McCarthy has been announced as UTV’s Head of Sponsorship and Promotions while Daragh O’Halloran has been appointed Head of Research after holding a a similar position in TV3. Deirdre Stokes joins UTV Ireland as Head of Sales Operations with responsibility for all sales operations including traffic and airtime management. David Townend was appointed for UK Sales.

Áine Ní Chaoindealbháin has been appointed general manager. She will oversee UTV Ireland develop as a Dublin-based broadcast centre. She is a former head of production for Setanta Sports and also worked as general manager for Sky News Ireland. As head of programme acquisitions, newly-appointed Rowan O’Sullivan will be based in London.
