23 IFTA Nominations for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has received a record number of 23 nominations across various categories in this year’s 11th annual Irish Film and Television Awards, which take place this Saturday, April 5, and will be broadcast on RTE ONE at 9.35pm.

Hosted by Simon Delaney and Laura Whitmore, the awards are set to feature a number of established Northern Irish actors and talent such as Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Grey), Antonia Campbell-Hughes (Albert Nobbs) and Ciarán Hinds (Munich). The awards recognise a number of filmmakers, cast and crew members that work on set, and projects that were filmed in Northern Ireland.

BBC’s popular crime drama ‘The Fall’ is up for six awards: Actor in a Lead Role (Jamie Dornan), Director of Photography (Ruairi O’Brien), Make Up and Hair, Production Design (Tom McCullough) and Original Score (David Holmes).’The Fall’ will also compete with ‘Game of Thrones’ for Best Drama. Based on George R.R Martin’s best-selling book series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, the television series, which is filmed in a number of sites across Northern Ireland as well as Iceland, Morocco, Malta, Croatia and other locations, has provided a huge boost to the province's film and tourism industries. The standard of television dramas being produced across Ireland north and south continues to generate large audiences nationally and internationally with productions being sold abroad in various territories around the world. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, ‘Game of Thrones’ has also been nominated for a further four categories including Actor in a Supporting Role (Aidan Gillen and Liam Cunningham), Actress in a Supporting Role (Michelle Fairley) and Sound (Ronan Hill).

Ciarán Hinds is nominated for Actor in a Leading Role for Samson Films’ ‘The Sea’, based on the novel of the same name by John Banville, and Northern Ireland born Antonia Campbell-Hughes for Actress in a Leading Role (3096 Days).

Philomena, which was filmed partly in Northern Ireland, is up for four awards including International Film, International Actress (Judi Dench), Costume (Consolata Boyle) and Director of Photography (Robbe Ryan). Nik Emerson is nominated in the Editing category for his work on the prison drama ‘Starred Up’, which was filmed on location at Crumlin Road Gaol.

BBC Northern Ireland’s ‘The Disappeared’ is up for Best Documentary against Tyrone Productions’ ‘Danny Boy – The Ballad that Bewitched the World’. In the current affairs category ‘Spotlight – Housing Whatever it Takes’ will go head to head against RTÉ’s ‘Breach of Trust’, Animo Televisions ‘Inside Irish Nationwide’ and TV3’s ‘Tonight with Vincent Browne’.

Two Irish Language Broadcast Fund series received nominations; Big Mountain Productions’ ‘Dúshlán 1881 – Living the Eviction’ in the Reality category and ‘Scúp’ in the Irish Language category. DoubleBand Films’ ‘Seamus Heaney – Photoscript –Imeall’ has also been nominated in the Factual category.

Speaking about the nominations, Moyra C. Lock, Head of Marketing and Exhibition at Northern Ireland Screen, said: "We are delighted at the strong showing of both talent and product from Northern Ireland in the list of nominations for this year’s IFTAs. The ceremony is a wonderful showcase and helps us promote the wealth of creative talent in Northern Ireland to a wider audience. It is great to see productions from such a broad variety of categories nominated including film, TV drama, documentary, current affairs and Irish language and we send sincere congratulations to all the nominees."

The annual Awards Ceremony which will be held on Saturday, April 5, at the DoubleTree Hilton on Burlington Road, will showcase the best of Ireland’s creative talent both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, and will acknowledge Irish excellence and achievements. The Ceremony will be broadcast primetime on RTÉ ONE at 9.35pm.
