‘Vikings’ Renewed for Third Season
25 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Following the last episode of the first series screening last Sunday night on RTÉ Two, and with the History Channel in the US currently showing the second series, ‘Vikings’ has proven it is in high demand still as it has received an order for a 10-episode third season. It will begin production this summer for a 2015 release.

In Ireland, the average amount of viewers for the first eight episodes of the first season was 189,000. The average share for all viewers was 11.7% but for ABC1 audiences, share figures were higher, and for Men ABC1, the average share was 16%. In the USA, Season 2 has averaged 3.4 million total viewers, 1.7 million adults aged 25-54 and 1.5 million adults aged 18-49, leading the Thursday 10pm slot in cable as well as being the History Channel’s most popular show.

“‘Vikings’ has taken viewers by storm and has established itself as one of the most compelling, visually stunning dramas on television,” comments History General Manager Dirk Hoogstra. “With its large, passionate and loyal fan base, ‘Vikings’ has cemented History firmly in the scripted series genre, just as we are the leaders in reality television.”

‘Vikings’ centres on Ragnar (Travis Fimmel), a restless young warrior and family man who longs to find and conquer new lands across the sea and claim the spoils as his own. Irish actors that have appeared so far in the series include Gabriel Byrne, Clive Standen, John Kavanagh, Tadhg Murphy, David Pearse, Diarmuid Murtagh, Ruby O’ Leary and Nathan O’Toole.

The series is produced by MGM Television. The creator and writer of ‘Vikings’, Michael Hirst, executive produces with Morgan O’Sullivan of World 2000 Productions, John Weber of Take 5, with Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, James Flynn and Sheila Hockin. Hirst and O’Sullivan were also responsible for the hit series ‘The Tudors’, starring Jonathon Rhys Meyers as the infamous King Henry VIII.

The first two series of ‘Vikings’ were shot in Co. Wicklow with approximately 400 Irish people involved in their production. A number of key Irish professionals were involved in the production of ‘Vikings’, including director Ciarán Donnelly (‘The Tudors’, ‘Stardust’, ‘Titanic: Blood and Steel’), Joan Bergin (‘Tudors’, ‘David Copperfield’, ‘The Prestige’) and production designer Tom Conroy (‘Tudors’, ‘West is West’, ‘Breakfast on Pluto’).
