Galway Film Centre, in association with RTÉ, has announced two cash awards of €9,500 each under its 2014 Short Film Awards.
The awards will be given to the two best scripts submitted to the Galway Film Centre, with the deadline for submissions announced as 12 noon on Friday May 9th. The award scheme is specifically for new short Irish fiction films and is open to emerging filmmakers with original scripts that display a strong cinematic vision.
Galway Film Centre Manager, Declan Gibbons said: “In recent years the scripts that have succeeded have all had a producer attached at an early stage, so this year we are making it a condition to have a producer involved with the project before submission.
A good producer will help the writer develop the script and greatly improve the chances of selection. We are also encouraging young producers to get involved as working on a short film can be a great learning experience and open doors in the industry.”
Last year’s winners were ‘The Weather Report’ directed by Paul Murphy and ‘Our Unfenced Country’ directed by Niamh Heery. The latter film premiered at the recent Chicago Irish Film Festival and both films will screen at this month’s Belfast Film Festival.
Director Philip Kelly’s recent winner ‘Scratch’ was also screened at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, Galway Film Fleadh, London Short Film Festival and has just been selected for both the Tribeca Film Festival and the Tribeca Online Festival. One of 58 shorts selected from 3,074 submissions. Co-written by Liam Ryan and produced by Warrior Films, ‘Scratch’ stars Conor Drum, Stephen Jones (‘Between the Canals’), Sam Keeley (‘What Richard Did’) and Ian Lloyd Anderson (‘Love/Hate’). Eamonn Cleary edited and Eugene McCrystal was the colourist.
Mairtin De Barra’s ‘Atrophy’, a short film funded by RTE/Galway Film Centre, has played at a wide range of film festivals nationally and internationally and was also shown on Danish Television as part of the Odense International Film Festival. ‘Atrophy’ was produced by Blackrock, Dundalk based producer Fearghal Duffy, and written by Matt Roche.
Scripts for the 2014 Short Film Awards should be a maximum of 8 to 10 pages and a full list of conditions are available on the Galway Film Centre website. Application forms for submission are available on request from info@galwayfilmcentre.ie. Full details are available at the Galway Film Centre
