RTÉ in search of Entertaining, Engaging Formats for Lifestyle
05 Feb 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
A 4-part Factual Entertainment series and other formats are required for RTÉ One and Two. There are a small number of slots available in 2014 but RTÉ is also hoping to find series to develop and produce for early 2015.

The desired RTÉ Lifestyle series may take the form of an observational documentary or an expert-driven, transformational show. It must be capable of commanding the attention of younger demographics, as it is aimed particularly at 15 - 34 year olds, and should have a distinctive attitude and feel. ‘Don't Tell the Bride’ and ‘The Takeover’ were cited as good examples of successful shows in this regard.

RTÉ would like “a format with real drama, humour and attitude [presented by] brand new experts that speak to the concerns of this age-group - be it love, travel, settling down, money or work.”

Their first preference is for a series but a number of stand-alone programmes that could later develop into a series will also be considered: “we are particularly interested in finding situations and locations that could benefit from a longer-term observational approach.” Programmes will air between September and Christmas 2014.

Ideas must be submitted by 5pm Monday 10th February. More details on submitting may be found here.

Meanwhile, RTÉ One is looking for strong, clearly identifiable new formats for May 2014 and September 2014. They are open to all categories within Lifestyle such as business make-overs, money, health, parenting, food, design, relationships and consumer issues. Many series have been in the schedule for a number of years so all areas and current slots may be up for grabs but only if the new proposition offers something which is at least as strong as its predecessor.

Submissions should engage with preoccupations and fads in Ireland in 2014. Programmes should have closed narratives with presenters that are experts in their field and also engaging. An advantage will be given to big public service campaigns while Sunday night slot proposals should work across all generations.

Producers are requested to first submit ideas into the eCommissioning system: https://e-commissioning.rte.ie/SWIFT.Web/skins/rte/login.aspx under the programme category “Daytime & Lifestyle Midweek & Sundays.”
