Emmy Award winning Production Sound Mixer and two-time IFTA winner, Ronan Hill has received his 3rd consecutive Cinema Audio Society (CAS) nomination for outstanding achievement in sound mixing, for ‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 ‘The Rains of Castamere’.

Belfast based Hill won the 2012 Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing, ‘Game of Thrones’ S2, ‘Blackwater’.

The 50th annual CAS awards take place on the 22nd of February in Los Angeles, California, and will profile a wide range of film and television series’ including Breaking Bad, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire and The Walking Dead.

Hill, one of the most in-demand sound recordists in Ireland, spoke to IFTN recently and gave practical tips on how to break into the industry. “Work with someone experienced. If you have a burning desire to do sound, this is really the best way to get experience. If you apply to join a training scheme such as Northern Ireland Screen’s ‘Aim High’ you can then be placed on productions like ‘Game of Thrones’ where valuable experience can be gained,” said Hill.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series, the award winning drama chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom.

Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and launched in April 2011, the series was filmed in Titanic Studios in Belfast, the Linen Mill Film Studios in Banbridge, as well as various locations in Northern Ireland such as Shane’s Castle, Mourne Mountains, Cairncastle amongst others.

The cast includes familiar name such as Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Liam Cunningham, Aidan Gillen, along with some new members including Roger Ashton-Griffiths (Gangs of New York), Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Joel Fry (Trollied, Plebs) and Pedro Pascal (Homeland, The Good Wife).
