‘Love/Hate’ has been renewed for a fourth season, RTÉ has announced.

The gangland drama, which aired its season three finale in December 2012, received the highest ratings of its two previous seasons, and is up for 11 IFTA Awards this weekend.

Developed by Octagon Films and RTÉ, the last season saw fan favourite Darren, played by Robert Sheehan, killed off in a dramatic gangland killing, while popular character Tommy, played by Killian Scott, was left in a coma after a brutal beating by his gang boss Nidge, played by IFTA nominee Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

Stuart Carolan, up for Best Writer at Saturday’s awards, is currently writing the script for season four. Production is scheduled to begin in April, with the majority of cast still in limbo as to the fate of their characters.

Suzanne McAuley produces the hit TV series, with David Caffrey directing. The show has been acquired by US on-demand service HULU, and the second series has been broadcast in Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the MiddleEast. Jane Gogan commissioned the original series for RTÉ.

Suzanne McAuley said: “The entire cast and crew are really looking forward to getting back into ‘Love/Hate’ mode again. We have a fantastic team in place and are so proud to be nominated for 11 IFTA’s. It’s so rewarding to be involved in such a successful project that has attracted an incredibly dedicated following and won critical acclaim as well.”

An average audience of 953,000 viewers watched the season three finale last December, with the third series had an average of 748,000 viewers overall.

Tune into RTÉ One on Saturday, February 9 at 9.35pm to see if ‘Love/Hate’ triumphs at the 10th IFTA Awards.
