Top Irish Talent Among Emmy Award Nominees
19 Jul 2012 : By Eva Hall
Lorna Marie Mugan and Ronan Hill are both up for Emmy Awards
A host of Irish crew members and co-productions have been nominated for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards including ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Treasure Island’ and Neil Jordan’s ‘The Borgias’.

Irish costume designer Lorna Marie Mugan has been nominated for a prestigious Emmy for her creations for Irish co-production ‘Treasure Island’.

Mugan and costume supervisor Rhona McGuirke have been nominated in the Outstanding Costume for a Mini-series category, and are up against ‘American Horror Story’ and ‘Sherlock’s’ costume department.

Mugan has also created the costumes for BBC period drama ‘Ripper Street’, which is nearing the end of production in Dublin. To see some of Mugan’s 1889-set designs from ‘Ripper Street’ view our set-report gallery.

Northern Irish-based production mixers Ronan Hill and Mervyn Moore have been nominated in the Outstanding Sound Mixing category for HBO fantasy series 'Game of Thrones’, which is currently filming season three in Northern Ireland.

Amy Hubbard, of Irish-owned Hubbard Casting, is up for Outstanding Casting for a Mini-series, Movie or Special for the History Channel’s ‘Hatfields & McCoys’, along with Fern Champion.

In the nominations which were announced today, ‘Game of Thrones’ has been nominated for 11 awards in total, with Jordan’s 15th century-based period drama ‘The Borgias’ nominated in three different categories. Irish co-production ‘Treasure Island’ has been nominated in two categories in total.

George RR Martin’s medieval fantasy adventure earned American actor Peter Dinklage an Outstanding Supporting Actor nomination, pitting him against ‘Downton Abbey’ actor and Irish-descendant Brendan Coyle. Coyle, whose father is Irish, studied acting in Dublin.

‘Game of Thrones’ has also been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series; Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series; Outstanding Casting for Drama Series; Outstanding Costumes for a Series; Outstanding Hairstyling for Single-Camera Series; Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media; Outstanding Sound Editing; Sound Mixing; Special VFX and Outstanding Makeup for Miniseries and Single-Camera Series, which was supplied by Conor O’Sullivan, who has worked on a number of Irish co-productions including ‘The Tudors’.

‘Treasure Island’ cinematographer Ulf Brantås is nominated for Outstanding Cinematography. ‘Treasure Island’ was shot in Dublin and Cork in 2010, with Irish director Steve Barron helming. Dublin’s Parallel Films co-produced with Sky.

Neil Jordan’s period drama creation ‘The Borgias’ is nominated for Outstanding Costumes for a Series, as well as Outstanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series and Outstanding Music Composition for a Series.

The series is directed by Jordan, shot in Hungary and produced in Canada. Stephen Spielberg is a producer on the series, which stars Jeremy Irons and Francois Arnaud.

As previously reported on IFTN, Dublin-based Crossing the Line Films’ ‘Broken Tail’ is also up for two News and Documentary Emmy Awards in the Best Nature Programme and Best Cinematography categories.

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 23.
