RTÉ To Develop Premium On-Demand Service As Part Of New Digital Division
2012-05-22 15:50 : By Steve Cummins
Múirne Laffan
RTÉ is planning to develop a premium on-demand streaming service as part of the launch of its new digital division, RTÉ Digital.

The planned paid-for content service will see a number of the broadcaster’s television series and other archive content made available for sale online and on-demand.

Such content, including popular series such as ‘Love/Hate’ and ‘Killinaskully,’ has previously only been available for sale via physical formats such as DVD and video.

The premium on-demand service will not affect the RTÉ player, which currently allows viewers to stream content on-demand for free over a limited period of time.

RTÉ Digital will also seek to develop partnerships with other companies in the areas of content provision.

The new division has been put in place to ensure that the broadcaster’s content and services – such as the RTÉ Player and RTÉ News Now – will be available on-demand across a number of platforms and devices.

Múirne Laffan, managing director of RTÉ Digital said: “Audiences are changing dramatically with the advent of new, more affordable and more sophisticated technologies.

“As the media landscape is evolving, so too is RTÉ. The new digital division will bring RTÉ’s content to new audiences in different ways and anticipate the future needs of our users. Whether our audiences want to connect with us on mobile, IPTV, desktop, connected TVs, notebook or on gaming devices, our strategy is to ensure RTÉ content is accessible on whatever device, and everywhere.”
