After a rumour emerged yesterday afternoon that City Channel would suspend operations, Chief Executive Dave Harvey of City Channel has denied these claims telling IFTN the station will “remain in business – our channels remain on air,” but conceded City Channel is currently involved in ”a strategic review."
Dave Harvey told IFTN he believes that City Channel is not alone in their trouble, saying there are "very serious issues nationwide in the broadcast sector. It is a difficult time for all media businesses".
The network began broadcasting in 2005 and had three stations: City Channel Dublin, City Channel Galway and Channel South. Some of City Channel's prime-time programmes include ‘The Evening Show’ presented by Jimmy Greeley and Olive Geoghan, ‘Gay Nation’ and ‘The Evening Show’.
The strategic review and financial problems at City Channel is just one of many blows to Irish broadcasters in recent years including similar review strategies in RTÉ, Setanta Ireland’s closure of their UK channels, Channel 6 being bought by TV3 and the closure of Bubble Hits in 2009.
