‘All is By My Side’ out in Cinemas Today
24 Oct 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
When there was talk that a Jimi Hendrix biopic was shooting here in our city capital in the summer of 2012, people were ecstatic. The film has garnered even more anticipation since with the news that Outcast’s Andre Benjamin would play the iconic lead and the film would be written and directed by John Ridley, Oscar winner for ‘12 Years a Slave’.

On the festival rounds, the film has screened at SXSW in Texas, the Seattle International Film Festival and Italy’s Biografilm Festival. Now it will receive its highly anticipated Irish release at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) and the Light House Cinema in Smithfield, Dublin.

IFTN spoke with Tristan Orpen Lynch who was a producer on the film through his firm Subotica: “‘All is by my Side’ is a very ambitious project, set in New York and London in the late 1960s. We shot the entire film in Dublin. It is a great example of how skilled, professional and creative the Irish film industry has become.

“We met with co-producers Nigel Thomas of Matador Pictures and Sean McKittrick of Darko productions in LA and Toronto about a year before shooting to start the planning. The pre-production and shoot were very well planned by the team and John Ridley the director brought a real sense of something special was unfolding.”

Tristan also tells us about Andre Benjamin’s eagerly anticipated performance as one of the biggest rock stars of all time: “Andre in particular had a difficult job in portraying one of the most iconic musicians of all time but amazingly managed to play the role with real talent and credibility - he is totally compelling to watch.

“We had a fun time with Dublin’s paparazzi (all 3 of them) as we tried to keep the film under wraps and not disclose Andre’s look. He has such a presence in the character that on the first day of shooting a music scene, many of the crew members had tears in their eyes as Jimi came to life - it was quite moving. The overall experience was hard work but very positive and the end result is something everyone is proud to have been involved in.”

The supporting cast includes Imogen Poots, Burn Gorman and Hayley Atwell, as well as Irish cast members Ruth Negga, Aoibhinn McGinnity, Laurence Kinlan and Amy De Bhrún. Irish HODs included DOP Tim Fleming, costume designer Leonie Prendergast, hair designer Lorraine Glynn and sound recordist Dan Birch (keep an eye on IFTN for upcoming interviews).

There could be more good news for production in Ireland also as Tristan told IFTN, “John and the Darko team were hugely impressed with the Irish crew and cast and they are hoping to bring more films to shoot in Ireland. The look and quality of the film reflects the commitment of the production crew in Ireland and the work in post-production in the UK.”
