The Genealogy Roadshow Returns This Sunday TX RTÉ1 7pm
08 May 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
‘The Genealogy Roadshow’ is back for a brand new series. The international hit show has criss-crossed the nation in search of ordinary people with extraordinary stories for a second season of the Big Mountain production. The original Irish programme is now an international hit series - PBS in America has already broadcast a US version of the show shot in Detroit, San Francisco, Nashville and Austin, Texas. Season 2 of the US show is in the works.

RTÉ’s ‘The Genealogy Roadshow’ returns to screens on May 11th with the people of Ireland as the stars of the show again. The series will be presented by Derek Mooney for a second time. Thousands of people from across the four provinces contacted the show with questions, and got to know the truth about tragic events, infamous ancestors and famous cousins. Some people get the news they want but not every tale has a happy ending.

‘The Roadshow’’s historical and genealogical team help people trace their family’s roots and discover surprising stories from the past. The show’s team of experts include professional genealogists John Grenham and Susan Chadwick, as well as author-historian of the award-winning ‘Vanishing Ireland’ series, Turtle Bunbury.

‘The Genealogy Roadshow’ also sheds light on the people history has forgotten, looking at local and national events and asking who didn’t get the credit they deserve. The team takes a look at people and events you think you know, but tells stories you haven’t heard before.

This year the show has added technology to the bag of tricks. Historians and witnesses from around the world are able to beam in directly to the roadshow to give expert testimony and corroborate evidence.

Some of the stories involve Irish people in faraway places - Irish immigrants going to Argentina were part of an international crisis as thousands were scammed out of their life savings and left stranded; an innocent Irish girl was gunned down in a Canadian frontier town, caught up in a local blood feud; a Longford woman went to America and became a notorious criminal in the era of Al Capone.

Other stories are closer to home: after years of listening to his father’s stories, a Dundalk man finds out once and for all if he is related to St. Oliver Plunkett; a Cork man discovers that his relatives were saved from the gallows by Daniel O’Connell; an Orangeman’s wife keeps her Catholic identity a secret, even from her family, for her whole life; and there’s some myth-busting into the mystery of ‘The Lost Village of Audleystown’.

Ray McCarthy is executive producer for RTÉ. Jane Kelly and Philip McGovern executive produce the series while Richard Weller was series producer and Frank Agnew produced. Jane Kelly was the live event director, Vicky Bevis was head of production, Joanne O’Hagan was production manager and Denise Fogarty was production co-ordinator. Martin Birney and Brian Moore worked on camera while Alison Black edited and Joe Marcus was on-line editor.

‘The Genealogy Roadshow’ is back on your screens from Sunday 11th May at 7pm on RTÉ One.
