July deadline for Jesuit film & video awards

Budding film makers are invited to submit entries for the 7th annual Jesuit film & video awards. The deadline is 31st of July.

With over £4,000 worth of prizes on offer, the awards are open to 18-25 year olds, or anyone attending a 3rd level college. The theme, "Social Justice in Irish Society" is aimed at challenging young film makers to examine issues which can be both controversial and disturbing.

There are a number of different award categories:

  • Best Drama
  • Best Documentary
  • Best Irish Language Entry
  • Best use of Contemporary Irish Music

The overall winner will be chosen from amongst these.

Susan Talbot of Dun Laoghaire College of Art & Design, was last year's overall winner. Her documentary 'Nobody's Nothing', was about Ernest Berkenhuer, one of the many German children fostered in Ireland in the aftermath of the second world war. The film examined the way he was treated in Ireland, a relevant film in light of the ongoing debate about refugee's rights.

If any member of a winning team has a four year degree, they may be entered into a separate competition for a studentship to undertake a Master's degree at Syracuse University in New York.

The awards are run by the Jesuit Communication Centre in association with Independent Newspapers, Teilifis na Gaeilge/RTE, IMRO and Syracuse University.
