Wednesday 5 - Thursday 6 August 1998

This two-day course offers producers, production managers and all production staff an opportunity to have a better practical understanding of how to apply copyright and related laws when making films or television programmes.

Copyright Law is changing. Financing for film and television programmes is becoming more complex as 100% from one market becomes ever more difficult and co-production and co-finance increasingly necessary. Consequently, production staff are faced with an increase volume and complexity of the legal documentation necessary to produce a film or television programme.

The Course will cover stages of film and TV production from development through production to distribution and exploitation of both fiction and documentary.

Areas covered include:-

    - How films are financed
    - Using a lawyer
    - Underlying Rights and Option Agreements
    - Performers Agreements
    - Location Agreements
    - Stills
    - Archive Film
    - Defamation and libel (programme content)
    - Co-production and libel (programming content)
    - Copyright laws and European Directives
    - Effects of Directives on rights clearances
