Catalyst International Film Festival
The Catalyst International Film Festival has announced that submissions are now open for the 4th edition of the festival taking place in Limerick 31st March - 1st April 2023.

Award categories include Irish Short Film, International Short Film, Documentary Short Film, Short Screenplay, Spirit of the Festival, Audience Award and Emerging Filmmaker.

This is truly a unique festival that celebrates diversity in filmmaking,” said Dr Susan Liddy, founder and co-director of the festival. “Catalyst aims to present great films, great scripts and has great ambitions to make equality, diversity and inclusion the norm, not the exception.”

Ruth Negga continues in her role as Ambassador for the festival calling Catalyst “a buoyant celebration of the multitude of exciting stories brimming in modern Ireland”. The festival prioritises stories and storytellers who may struggle for visibility in the film industry and in mainstream film festivals and will feature a programme including but not limited to those who are under-represented in gender, race, social and economic exclusion, disability, age, and sexual orientation on screen and behind the camera.

The festival will continue its partnership with the Writers Guild of Ireland (WGI) in presenting the Short Screenplay Award. Speaking about the partnership, Chair of the WGI Jennifer Davidson said: “This screenwriting award and the festival’s emphasis on diversity echoes our own principles of diversity, equity, and equality within the Guild, and our core belief that writers are the heart of the film industry.”

Dr Susan Liddy says that Catalyst recognises the power of the screenwriter to change the conversation. “Everything starts with the writer. The goal of the Short Screenplay Award is to promote and champion new stories, new voices and new perspectives. We at Catalyst are working towards more equal and diverse screen industries. We call on screenwriters, emerging and established, national and international, to help us create that change,” Dr. Liddy said.

Mindful of the power of film to engage and challenge, Catalyst International Film Festival will provide thought provoking cinema and proactive debate. The festival seeks to generate new audiences and discussion around gender equality, diversity, and inclusion and the practice of that by individual filmmakers. Festival guests will speak to diversity whether in the vision, themes and characters explored in their films, and/or in the diversity of their personnel and crew. Catalyst aims to generate new audiences for film culture and present a thought provoking and innovative programme.
