BAFTA 2022: Ruth Negga, Jessie Buckley, and Caitríona Balfe nominated for Best Supporting Actress
03 Feb 2022 : Nathan Griffin
Ruth Negga, Caitríona Balfe, and Jessie Buckley have been nominated for BAFTAs.
Five Irish nominees have been revealed among the short list for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards, which take place at the Royal Albert Hall on March 13th.

Northern Irish drama Belfast also picked nominations for Best Film and Best Outstanding British Film, while writer/director Kenneth Branagh received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

The nominees for the 2022 BAFTA Awards were announced by hosts AJ Odudu and Tom Allen who streamed live from BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, and come ahead of this year’s Oscar nominees being revealed next week by The Academy (February 8th).

For only the second year in BAFTA’s history, the British Academy revealed the longlist of each awards category last month. This saw Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story emerge as front runners with 15 mentions each, while Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog following close with 14.

This year’s awards ceremony will take place on March 13th, with Rebel Wilson featuring as host. The Awards will mark the first in-person BAFTA event at London’s Royal Albert Hall since prior to the pandemic in 2020.

Three Irish actresses have been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), Caitriona Balfe (Belfast), and Ruth Negga (Passing) are joined by Ariana Debose (West Side Story), Ann Dowd (Mass), and Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard).

Ciaran Hinds (Belfast) has picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, though his co-star Jamie Dornan has missed out with Mike Faist (West Side Story), Troy Kotsur (Coda), Woody Norman (C’mon, C’mon), Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) rounding out the category.

IFTA winning Irish editor Úna Ní Dhonghaíle has received her third BAFTA Film Award nomination for her work on Belfast. A previous BAFTA TV Craft winner (Three Girls), the editor will be joined by fellow nominees Joe Walker (Dune), Andy Jurgensen (Licorice Pizza), Tom Cross and Elliot Graham (No Time To Die), and Joshua L. Pearson (Summer of Soul).

The EE Rising Star Award, which is the only award voted for by the public, was announced earlier this week. This year rising stars includes Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Harris Dickinson (The Kingsman), Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel, No Time to Die), Millicent Simmonds (A Quiet Place II), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog).

The winners will be announced on Sunday, March 13th at Royal Albert Hall in London, and will be closely followed by the 94th Annual Academy Awards on March 27th.
