Lost Lives
The Northern Ireland Screen-supported documentary has been shortlist by the Grierson Trust for the 2020 British Documentary Awards in association with All3Media.

Produced by DoubleBand Films, Lost Lives is nominated in the Best Historical Documentary category.

Lost Lives, which premiered at the 2019 London Film Festival, is a major cinematic and timely film inspired by the book of the same name, which records every single death and its circumstances since the beginning of the Troubles. Commissioned by BBC, funded by Northern Ireland Screen and produced by DoubleBand Films, the heartfelt film is a cinematic homage to the victims, from all sides.

Directed by Dermot Lavery and Michael Hewitt Lost Lives is powerfully narrated by famous Irish and Northern Irish actors, including Kenneth Branagh, Bríd Brennan, Roma Downey, Adrian Dunbar, Michelle Fairley, Bronagh Gallagher, Brendan Gleeson, Dan Gordon, Conleth Hill, Ciarán Hinds, Susan Lynch, Des McAleer, Martin McCann, Ian McElhinney, Sean McGinley, James Nesbitt, Liam Neeson, Emer O’Connor, Stephen Rea, Judith Roddy, Michael Smiley, and Bronagh Waugh. The film weaves archive footage with recordings of family and friends responding to the devastating news of the death of loved ones. A score performed by the Ulster Orchestra and striking cinematography complete this elegiac piece.

This is a particularly challenging time for filmmakers, so I’m pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate some of the most outstanding factual programmes broadcast in the past 12 months,” said Lorraine Heggessey, Chair of The Grierson Trust. “This year’s shortlist showcases the creativity and fearlessness of the world’s filmmakers as they take viewers to the heart of issues affecting all our lives. I’m also thrilled that 2020 shortlist represents the biggest range of channels, broadcasters and platforms to date, as commissioners recognise the crucial role the documentary plays in every schedule.”

“The Grierson Awards recognise the crème de la crème of documentary making with young newcomer directors standing shoulder to shoulder with Grierson-winning alumni. Our juries now face a summer of deliberation and I look forward to announcing the final nominations in the autumn.”

The 48th annual awards ceremony will take place on 10th November 2020.
