Irish feature film project selected for Berlinale Co-Production Market
17 Jan 2020 : Nathan Griffin
Berlinale Co-Production Market
Nick Kelly’s feature film project, Bedsitterland has been selected as one of 36 projects to participate in the 17th Berlinale Co-Production Market, which runs from February 22nd to 26th.

The objective of the initiative is to highlight the 36 selected projects, whose producers are looking for co-production partners. This is the place to meet international co-producers, representatives of film funds, world sales and TV broadcasters, distributors and financiers from all over the world in 1,500 pre-organised one-on-one meetings.

“I’m obviously delighted and excited that Bedsitterland has been selected for this great opportunity, said writer/director Nick Kelly, when speaking about his selection to IFTN. “It’s an unusual coming-of-age story with strong psychological drama elements, a powerful young female protagonist, and three major supporting roles.”

Kelly, who won Best First Irish Feature at the Galway Film Fleadh and was nominated for Best Screenplay at the IFTAs in 2018 for his film The Drummer and the Keeper, highlighted the timely and universal nature of his new project’s subject matter as a key reason for its attractiveness to international suitors.

“I do think that Bedsitterland is particularly well suited to international co-production,” said Kelly. “Its themes are contemporary and universal. Its setting actually suggests casting across nationalities. And the fact that much of the shoot would necessarily be studio-based means that we can really benefit from the creative talent and production facilities available in other territories.”

The project will be produced by Samson Films, who come off the back of a successful 2019 following the release of Carmel Winters Float like a Butterfly and Viko Nikci’s Cellar Door, with additional support coming from Screen Ireland and other EU counterparts.

“I’ve admired Samson’s approach for a long time, and we’d already been worked together very well on another project when I showed them this scrip,” continued Kelly. “I’m also thrilled that Dries Phlypo of A Private View has come on board as Benelux co-producer, and that Screen Ireland is offering us Development Support. It’s great to feel this level of momentum behind us as we travel to Berlin.”

Of the official project selection, 21 feature film projects with budgets ranging from €750,000 to €5 million were selected from 302 different submissions. With eleven projects by female directors, the proportion here has exceeded 50% for the first time. A total of 15 female directors’ projects are represented in the selection, i.e. 41.7%.

The main supporters of the Berlinale Co-Production Market are the MDM - Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung and the Creative Europe - MEDIA programme of the European Union.

The Berlinale Co-Production Market is part of the European Film Market. Another cooperation partner and the main venue is the Berlin House of Representatives.
