Saoirse Ronan and Martin McDonagh Pick Up Awards at 75th Golden Globes
08 Jan 2018 : Nathan Griffin
It was a successful night for Irish winners Martin McDonagh and Saoirse Ronan as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded them for Best Screenplay and Best Actress, respectively.

Other Irish nominees and productions on the night included ‘The Breadwinner’, ‘Game of Thrones’, and actress Caitriona Balfe.

Martin McDonagh’s ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’ took home four awards on the night winning Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Screenplay, and two awards for the leading cast Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell who picked up wins for Best Actress Drama and Best Supporting Actor. This was Martin McDonagh’s first Golden Globe win having also been nominated for Best Director, which was scooped by Guillermo del Toro for ‘Shape of Water’.

Saoirse Ronan as anticipated picked up her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in Musical or Comedy for her performance in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’. The 23 year old had previously been nominated for her roles in ‘Atonement’ (2008) and ‘Brooklyn’ (2015) but last night recorded her first major win at the ceremony, which was accompanied by ‘Lady Bird’ itself picking up Best Motion Picture Comedy/Musical.

‘Coco’ picked up the Best Animated Motion Picture award over ‘The Breadwinner’ last night in what was expected to be a very tightly contested category. The Pixar film is centred around the Mexican cultural celebration ‘Día de Ios Muertos’ or ‘Day of the Dead’, and was hailed as one of the most diverse films of 2017. The film includes an all-Latinx voice cast and is expected to be ‘The Breadwinners’ main competitor in the race to the Oscars.

Caitriona Balfe who picked up her third nomination for ‘Outlander’ was undoubtedly in one of the toughest categories of the night, missing out once more to Elisabeth Moss for her performance in Hulu original series ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. Other actresses involved in the category also included Claire Foy (‘The Crown’), Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘The Deuce’), and Katherine Langford (’13 Reasons Why’).

Gary Oldman beat Irish Resident Daniel Day-Lewis to the Best Actor Drama award, in a category that included Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, and Timothée Chalamet.

‘The Handmaid Tale’ picked up Best Television Series – Drama defeating another highly competitive category, which included ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Stranger Things’, ‘This Is Us’, and ‘The Crown’.

RTÉ will broadcast highlights of the 75th Golden Globes tonight at 9:30pm on RTÉ 2.
