Celebrating Five Years of Netflix in Ireland: Irish Talent, Titles & Upcoming Releases
13 Jan 2017 : Katie McNeice
The leading streaming service launched on January 10th 2012, making international shows available to Irish users and recently seeing some of our home-grown film and television joining the line-up of global content.

Netflix report over one hundred and twenty-five million hours of television shows are enjoyed on the service daily, with over eighty-six million members in one hundred and ninety countries.

In the last twelve months alone both film and television titles become available on download and more specifically to Ireland, Virgin Media launched Netflix on Horizon TV.

As Irish film and television continues to move from strength to strength, our content and talent’s presence on the service is also growing.

Just last year, ‘The Siege of Jadotville’ (Richie Smith) starring Jamie Dornan (The Fall), Sam Keeley (Anthropoid) and Jason O’Meara (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) produced by Alan Moloney of Parallel Films become the first project to premiere as an Irish Netflix Original on Monday, September 19th.

Alan Moloney, Producer Parallel Film Productions:
“As filmmakers, we are constantly looking for new ways to bring a movie to the largest possible audience. Netflix has already reinvented the TV market and is now moving front and centre into the film business. We are proud and excited to be part of their story and innovation.”

Ten Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer:
“The story of how Pat Quinlan led his troops against an overwhelming force without losing a single man is one of the great stories of the 20th century, and we are proud to be working with such a talented and committed team to bring it to life…This film will be an amazing addition to our global original films initiative.”

Another of our major 2016 titles available on Netflix is John Carney’s ‘Sing Street’ produced by Cosmo Films and starring IFTA Best Supporting Actor in Film Winner Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) alongside newcomers Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Vikings).

Joining this are the Oscar-nominated ‘Brooklyn’ (John Carney) and Irish-Greek Co-Production ‘The Lobster’ (Yorgos Lanthimos) starring Colin Farrell (True Detective).

In just two days Marty Stalker’s documentary ‘Hostage to the Devil’ becomes available, with new CBC drama ‘Anne of Green Gables’ starring young NI Actress Amybeth McNulty (Clean Break) also premiering in the Spring.

Jason O’Meara features in ‘The Frontier’ which recently announced it will release Friday, January 20th, as will ‘A Futile and Stupid Gesture’ starring Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) later this year.

Other recent releases featuring Irish acting talent are: ‘The OA’ starring Patrick Gibson, (What Richard Did), ‘Marco Polo’ S02 featuring Gabriel Byrne (Mad to be Normal) and ‘Black Mirror’ S03 featuring Elizabeth Moynihan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).

Gabriel Byrne, Actor, ‘Marco Polo:
"An interesting change has happened over the last few years in terms of film and television; more people are watching Netflix rather than actually are actually going to see independent films. So, in a way, Netflix, HBO, Showtime, they are now in people’s houses with what used to be the product of the cinema...There’s tremendous scope artistically to deal with a variety of topics because of the freedom in these kind of productions...And it’s changed the way people absorb entertainment."

Preceding this Irish titles which released to Netflix in 2015 were ‘The Fall’ starring Jamie Dornan, ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’(Patrick Ryan), ‘Calvary’ (John Michael McDonagh), ‘Frank’ ( Lenny Abrahamson) ‘Gold’ (Niall Heery) and ‘The Stag’(John Butler). The first season of Irish language drama ‘An Klondike’ S01 (Daithí Keane), released as ‘Dominion Creek.

Daithí Keane, Creator/Director, ‘An Klondike’:
"Our ambition with An Klondike was to create a drama series that could be shown anywhere in the world. It is a series that tells a uniquely Irish story but in a way that will appeal to audiences worldwide and it's a testament to the quality of the production, and the very high calibre of the work of everyone who was involved, that international broadcasters and platforms like Netflix have acquired the series."
