Short Film ‘Lily’ & Director Graham Cantwell honoured at the Santa Fe Film Festival
21 Dec 2016 : Katie McNeice
The Irish LGBT project was awarded as Best Narrative Short while Cantwell received The Courage in Cinema award.

Cantwell’s IFTA-nominated ‘The Callback Queen’ previously screened in Santa Fe at George RR Martin's Jean Cocteau Cinema.

‘Lily’ also won the the Tiernan McBride Best Short Drama Award at the Galway Film Fleadh this year. Its US premiere was had at the prestigious Savannah Film Festival, while at home it was selected for the Kerry Film Festival and Clones Film Festival.

Clara Harte plays the titular character in this short film, starring alongside Dean Quinn as best friend Simon, with a supporting cast which includes Paul Ronan (Veronica Guerin), Aisling O’Neill (Fair City), and Lynette Callaghan (The Yank). Amy-Joyce Hastings (The Callback Queen) and Leah McNamara (Nails) also star.

Rich Henrich, Festival Programmer:
“The Courage in Cinema Award acknowledges a filmmaker for taking risks in storytelling to enlighten the world through the courage of cinematic storytelling. It isn't always easy to tell the stories of the marginalized and least heard or understood in society. Graham Cantwell places the quandary of humanity in the hands of an incredible cast to bring dignity and compassion to the screen for all to see.”

Graham Cantwell, Writer/Director:
“With a combination of Wild West style buildings and a thriving artistic community it is unique in my experience of American cities. We have close ties with Santa Fe, having visited previously and made many friends, so to be honoured here in this way really means a lot. I am grateful to the organisers of the Santa Fe Film Festival and to the people of Santa Fe for giving us such a warm reception and supporting us and our film in the way that they have. The quality of films in competition was exceptional, so for ‘Lily’ to have been awarded the 'Best Narrative Short' award is also very gratifying.”

‘Lily’ will be internationally distributed by Network Ireland Television.
