The lead Cast of the internationally acclaimed 'Vikings' series, which is filmed in Ireland and broadcast in over 100 territories worldwide, will participate in a special IFTA Discussion event this weekend on Sunday 27th November.

Among the leading actors participating are Katheryn Winnick, Clive Standen, John Kavanagh and Moe Dunford.

The series, which is among the top 10 TV Dramas in the world, is made by the History Channel, and is filmed almost entirely on location in Co Wicklow in Ireland with an annual budget of c €35m. The production has been one of the main contributors to Ireland’s film/drama sector over the past five years.

The epic Viking set is perched on the picturesque shores of Lough Tay in Wicklow and surrounded by rugged Irish mountainside, forests, lakes and seaside in the region including the Powerscourt Waterfall.  All interior shots are filmed in Ashford Film Studios nearby.

Vikings was the first-ever scripted Drama to be commissioned by the History Channel,  and has built a loyal audience of over 12 million people worldwide with an increasing number of die-hard fans beating a pathway as tourists to Ireland and Wicklow each year.  One of  Ireland’s top producers, Morgan O’Sullivan is the brains behind the Irish production with his long-time collaborator Michael Hirst as the creator and writer of the series.  O’Sullivan received an IFTA Lifetime Award and tribute in 2011 for his contribution to the industry.

About the event
The panel discussion will explore the ‘making of’ and the ‘behind the scenes’ process on Vikings from the point of view of the Actors, and will provide insight into various topics including creating the look and feel of their characters, rehearsal & shooting, filming mainly outside throughout Ashford Studios and Wicklow, the physical demands of the series battles and action scenes, working with Michael Hirst’s script and the evolution of the successful series from the first season.

The event is specifically tailored for Irish Academy Members within the Acting, Directing & Television Chapters to engage with and learn from the cast involved in an extraordinarily successful world-renowned Television Drama series.

Katheryn Winnick
Katheryn Winnick is a Canadian born actress whose performance as the fierce Lagertha has earned her several Best Actress nominations from Canadian Screen Awards, Critics Choice Television Awards, Gemini Awards, Golden Maple Awards.  Her credits show a diverse range of experience across both film and television.

Moe Dunford
Dunford received his second IFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Drama in April this year for his portrayal of Aethelwulf; his first win in 2015 was for his lead role in Terry McMahon’s ‘Patrick’s Day.’ Dunford’s career on the small screen has gone from strength to strength, from his role in ‘The Tudors’, to his roles of Niall in ‘Raw’ and Christian in Irish language series ‘An Crisis’. ‘Patrick’s Day’ proved a huge step for Dunford the following year, preceding his role in ‘Vikings’ and John Butler’s ‘Handsome Devil’, (which screens for IFTA Members on December 13th); other recent work includes The Flag (opposite Pat Shortt)
