With the IFTA Film & Drama Awards forthcoming (April 9), we continue our coverage with a look at the Best Editing Category.
The nominees this year are Mick Mahon (‘The Queen of Ireland’), Nathan Nugent (‘Room’), Stephen O’Connell (‘Viva’) and Emer Reynolds (‘My Name is Emily’).
Fresh off a win at October’s IFTA Gala Television Awards for ‘Rough Rider’ (he was also nominated for ‘After Braveheart’ on the night), Mick Mahon is nominated this year for the lauded Panti Bliss documentary ‘The Queen of Ireland’ – which is also nominated for Best Documentary Feature.
His cutting of the documentary has received acclaim. In praising the film, The Irish Times stated that “Mick Mahon’s skilful edits deftly weave through a huge social history without losing sight of the protagonist”. Mahon has previously been IFTA nominated three times in the one year (2013) for ‘Saving The Titanic’, ‘Gaeil Nua Eabhrac’ and ‘Chaplin the Waterville Picture’ and he also received a nomination in 2012 for ‘The Writing in the Sky’.

Receiving his fourth IFTA nomination this year is Nathan Nugent for Lenny Abrahamson’s Oscar nominated film ‘Room’. His work on the film has garnered critical praise from major US publications as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Nugent has previously been IFTA nominated for Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Frank’ and Juanita Wilson’s ‘As if I Am Not There’ and he won the IFTA in 2013 for ‘What Richard Did’ – also directed by Lenny Abrahamson.
Other credits of Nugent’s include the films ‘The Visit’, ‘Sensation’, ‘Run & Jump’, ‘Glassland’ and the Oscar nominated short film ‘The Door’. He is currently editing Juanita Wilson’s new feature film ‘Tomato Red’.

Nominated for his work on Paddy Breathnach’s Cuban set ‘Viva’ – which was shortlisted for the Foreign Language Oscar this year – is Stephen O’Connell. This is O’Connell’s third IFTA nomination after previous nods for ‘Stardust’ and ‘Damage’ in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
O’Connell is known for cutting major television dramas such as ‘Fortitude’, ‘Inspector George Gently’, ‘Camelot’, Titanic: Blood & Steel’ and ‘Moonfleet’. Feature film credits include Mary McGuckian’s ‘The Price of Desire’, ‘The Sea’, ‘West is West’ and ‘Borstal Boy’ and he is also currently editing the Irish feature film ‘Maudie’ – starring Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins and directed by Aisling Walsh – who is IFTA nominated this year for the TV drama ‘An Inspector Calls’.

Gunning for three IFTA Awards in a row this year (and six overall) is Emer Reynolds, nominated this year for her work in ‘My Name is Emily’. Reynolds was a double nominee last year, nominated for Terry McMahon’s ‘Patrick’s Day’ and Aoife Kelleher’s ‘One Million Dubliners’ – winning for her work in the latter film. The year before she won for editing the documentary ‘Here Was Cuba’ – which she also co-directed. Her other IFTA wins were for ‘Timbuktu’, ‘Shameless’ and ‘My Brothers’.
She has also received nominations for ‘The Eclipse’ and ‘Broken Tail’.
