IFTA Awards Focus: Best Supporting Actor Drama
13 May 2015 : Seán Brosnan
Andrew Scott is nominated alongside John Connors, Stephen Rea and Liam Cunningham
The 2015 IFTA Film & Drama Awards loom ever closer (May 24) and we continue our in-depth look at the event with a peek at the Best Supporting Actor Drama category.

Bursting with talent from an eclectic range of Irish and international dramas, this category includes John Connors (‘Love/Hate’), Liam Cunningham (‘Game Of Thrones’), Stephen Rea (‘The Honourable Woman’) and Andrew Scott (‘Sherlock: His Last Vow’).

The only first time nominee in this category, John Connors is nominated for his role as traveller Patrick in the gangland series ‘Love/Hate’, a role which has garnered him much critical notice with his character becoming graduating from a bit-part in season four to an integral starring role in season five.

Connors began acting at age 20, signing up for a part time course in the Abbey. John's first role was playing the leading role in Mark O' Connors ‘King of the Travellers’. Recent roles have included Charlie Haughey biopic ‘Charlie’, ‘Stalker’, ‘Jack and Ralph Plan A Murder’ and the short film ‘Skunky Dog’. He also has a role in Jim Sheridan’s upcoming film ‘The Secret Scripture’.

Gunning for his third IFTA Award for his praised performance as Davos Seaworth in HBO’s fantasy series ‘Game Of Thrones’ is Liam Cunningham. The Dublin actor has previously won IFTA’s for ‘Hunger’ in 2009 and the Palme D’or winning ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ in 2007 (a year that also saw him nominated in two other acting categories).

Other film roles of Cunningham’s include ‘The Guard’, ‘Noble’, ‘Perrier’s Bounty’, ‘War Horse’ and ‘Let Us Prey’.

Stephen Rea’s performance as Sir Hugh Hayden-Hoyle - the outgoing head of MI6's Middle East desk – recently won the Northern Irish actor his first ever BAFTA Award.

Rea has previously been nominated for two BAFTA Awards – for ‘Shadow Game’ and Neil Jordan’s ‘The Crying Game’ (with the latter film also garnering the actor an Oscar nomination). Rea won the IFTA in this category for his performance in the television movie ‘Father and Son’ and he has also been nominated in the past for ‘The Halo Effect’, ‘Breakfast On Pluto’ and ‘Nothing Personal’.

A double nominee at this year’s ceremony (joining the elite list of Emer Reynolds, Ken Galvin, David Holmes, Gerard Barrett and Terry McMahon) as his supporting role in British film ‘Pride’ has also been recognised - Andrew Scott has already won an IFTA in 2013 for his role as arch-villain Moriarty in BBC series ‘Sherlock’, a role which has also garnered him a BAFTA and a legion of international fans.

Scott has been nominated for IFTA’s in the past for ‘The Stag’ and ‘Dead Bodies’. Other roles of his include ‘Locke’, ‘Jimmy’s Hall’ and ‘Legacy’ with upcoming roles including ‘Spectre’, the new James Bond Film, as well as ‘Victor Frankenstein’, the latest adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale.

The IFTA Awards will take place on Sunday, May 24. Check out the full list of nominees here.
