‘Déithe na Spéire’ will explore how meteors and comets may have affected religious beliefs and mythologies
‘Déithe na Spéire’ (The Gods of the Sky) – a new Tile Films documentary unlocking the secrets behind Ireland’s sacred sites – will air on TG4 on Wednesday 4th February at 9.30pm.

Narrated by Irish-speaking actor Seán T. Ó Meallaigh (‘Charlie’, ‘1916 Seachtar Dearmadta’), this documentary explores the religious significance of our most hallowed sites and how celestial events influenced our most dramatic legends.

Using dramatic reconstructions and interviews with leading experts like Dr Patrick McCafferty, ‘Déithe na Spéire’ unlocks the secrets behind Ireland’s sacred sites, from the passage tomb of Newgrange to the stone circles of Beaghmore in County Tyrone. Why were they built? What strange rituals were carried out there?

The film is Directed and Produced by Irish filmmaker Stephen Rooke (‘’Waterways’, ‘Saving the Titanic’) and written and researched by David Ryan. The DOP of the project was Michael O’Rourke while the score was composed by Steve Lynch. Post production took place at EMC Post Production, Avatar Audio Postproduction and Mug Media.

Director and producer Stephen Rooke said: ‘Events like the Chelyabinsk and Dalkey meteors make us think about what exactly is going on in the sky overhead. We live in a fascinating era where we have now landed a probe, Rosetta on a comet. Our film asks an intriguing question, what did meteors and comets mean to people thousands of years ago?’

Writer David Ryan said: ‘The fact that a meteor crashing to earth may have affected religious beliefs and mythology is very interesting. It was fascinating to learn how our ancient ancestors reacted to comets and meteors before they had science to explain them.’

‘Déithe na Spéire’ (The Gods of the Sky) will air on TG4 on Wednesday, February 4th at 9.30pm.
