'Glassland' director Gerard Barrett set to direct third feature 'Brain on Fire'
Five Irish films and co-productions - ‘Glassland’, ‘Strangerland’, ‘The Hallow’, ‘The Visit’ and ‘Brooklyn’ - will all screen over the next week at the Sundance Film Festival, one of the world’s leading festivals for independent film - with 'Glassland' director Gerard Barrett slated to direct an adaptation of the novel 'Brain on Fire'.

Both ‘Glassland’ (directed by Gerard Barrett and produced by Element Pictures) and ‘Strangerland’ (co-produced by Fastnet Films) will screen in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section which only selects 12 films from thousands of entries.

‘The Visit’ (co-produced by Venom Film) will screen in the World Documentary Competition category – while ‘Brooklyn’ (directed by John Crowley and starring Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson) and ‘The Hallow’ (co-produced by Fantastic Films) will have their world premieres at the festival.

With 'Glassland' slated for an April 17th cinemas release in Ireland, the film's director has already lined up his next feature - an adaptation of Susannah Cahalan’s bestselling memoir Brain On Fire: My Month Of Madness.

A 2013 winner of the Rising Star IFTA, ‘Brain on Fire’ will be Barrett’s third film after ‘Pilgrim Hill’ and ‘Glassland’ – which was joint winner of Best Feature Film at the 2014 Galway Film Fleadh.

Barrett is adapting the screenplay for the film, which will star Dakota Fanning in the leading role. The story follows a young woman’s descent into insanity.

An Irish/Canadian co-production, ‘Brain On Fire’ will be produced by Charlize Theron, Beth Kono, and A.J. Dix for Denver & Delilah Films and Rob Merilees for Foundation Features. Barrett is also attached as a co-producer.

Shooting is set to take place in Vancouver and New York in May.

The Sundance Film Festival kicked off on January 22nd and will run until February 1st in Park City, Utah.
