‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ Selected for Slamdance
03 Dec 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The Slamdance Film Festival, launched as an alternative to Sundance, has unveiled its narrative and documentary competition line-ups for the 2015 festival taking place January 23rd-29th 2015. The festival, which has included showings of such notable titles as Oren Peli’s ‘Paranormal Activity’, will celebrate its 21st anniversary. It takes place at the Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City and will include 13 world premieres, two North American premieres and three US premieres.
p>‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ has been selected as one of the eleven films in the feature competition. The competition is limited to films made with budgets under $1 million and made by first-time directors. ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ marks the first independently funded Irish feature to be programmed in the festival’s two decade history, and will be one of only two European features playing in competition.

‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ is written and directed by Patrick Ryan. Starring Emma Eliza Regan, Emma Willis and Brian Gleeson, the film was shot entirely in Kerry and tells the story of a troubled teenage sharpshooter who strives to avenge the death of her estranged sister, blind to the fact that the killer is her best and only friend.

The film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July and also screened at the Underground Cinema film festival and Cork Film Festival. Slamdance marks the film’s US premiere.

Patrick Ryan stated: “Slamdance is a perfect fit for us, a festival that thrives on independence and originality. I hoped Darkness’ story would travel and resonate with international audiences, but to have it embraced like this on such a competitive, high profile platform is a real validation. It’s an honour. We’re thrilled to fly the flag in the US and continue what has been a fantastic year for Irish film.”
