Foyle Film Festival Announces Winners of 2014 Festival

Two short films have made it one step closer to an Oscar nomination after picking up a Light in Motion (LIM) award at the Foyle Film Festival’s closing ceremony in Brunswick Moviebowl.

‘Rubai’, directed by Irish filmmaker Louise Ni Fhiannachta, based on a seven-year-old atheist making her First Holy Communion and her dilemma of reconciling her beliefs with her communities, won Best Irish Short Film, whilst ‘A Good Story’ (Eine Gute Geschichte) won Best International Short Film.

Since 1999, the Foyle Film Festival has been an Oscar affiliated festival through its Light in Motions award, sponsored by City of Derry Crystal.

Last year’s Best Irish Short winner, Stephen Fingleton has recently made it onto the long list for best live-action short at the 2015 Academy Awards with his film ‘SLR’. Ten films appear on the list, from which five will go forward as Oscar nominees. Fingleton’s ‘SLR’ stars Liam Cunningham in the story of a pornographer who becomes obsessed with a mysterious, anonymous photographer.

Other winners at Sunday night’s Light in Motion awards included ‘A City Dreaming’, a film documentary written and narrated by the BBC broadcaster Gerry Anderson which shared the Best Documentary prize with ‘Gabor’, a story of a friendship between a young filmmaker and a blind cinematographer. Best Animated Short Film was presented to director Matthew Darragh for ‘Ode to Love’, that tells the story of a man on a desert island who falls in love with a stick.

Bernie McLaughlin, director and programmer of the Foyle Film Festival, said: ‘I would like to extend a huge congratulations to all the winners. The standard of this year’s entries was particularly high; the judges had a tough job to do. Since 1999, we have had a number of competitors who have proceeded to win the Oscar including: Terry George for ‘The Shore’ (2012) and Martin McDonagh for ‘Six Shooter’ (2006) so we have our fingers crossed for Stephen next January when the short list is announced.’

This year the Foyle Film Festival celebrated the 15th anniversary of becoming an Oscar affiliated festival with a special two-day industry event in the Nerve Centre with Oscar winners Andrea Arnold, Mia Bays and BAFTA-winner Andrew Eaton.

The Festival brought to a close five days of exclusive film premieres, gala screenings and special cinematic events with a screening of ‘Electricity’ in Brunswick Moviebowl. Featuring model Agyness Deyn the film is a British drama about a young woman whose epilepsy brings extraordinary hallucinations as she searches for her long-lost brother. The screening was introduced by its director Bryn Higgins.

The Foyle Film Festival is a flagship project of the Nerve Centre, supported by Northern Ireland Screen and Derry City Council. Venue partner is Brunswick Moviebowl.
