Irish Animated Short ‘Coda’ Makes Shortlist For 2015 Oscars
06 Nov 2014 : Seán Brosnan
The Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences have announced a shortlist of 10 films in contention for the 2015 Oscar For Best Animated Short with Irish film ‘Coda’ qualifying out of a possible 58 candidates.

‘Coda’- funded by the Irish Film Board (IFB), RTÉ and the Arts Council has been garnering a lot of buzz and has won a slew of awards this year including Best Irish Short Film at the Dublin Animation Film Festival in addition to winning Best in Show at the SXSW Festival in Texas, the Audience Choice Award at the Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (Korea) and joint best animated movie at Kraktofil Plus (Bosnia & Herzegovina). It also won the Grand Prize at Fest Anca for Best Animation at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and the Don Quijote Prize at the Galway Film Fleadh.

Commenting on the news, director Alan Holly said: 'When you work on a short film like this for such a long time, you really just want as many people as possible to see it. So it is wonderful to be getting such a positive international response, first at festivals and now to make the final ten films for the Academy Awards. In many ways 'Coda' is quite an Irish story, and yet there are also a lot of very universal elements to the film as well, which I think international audiences really relate to. And then of course there are parts that are quite personal to me too, so yes, I really happy to see the film take off internationally.'

James Hickey, Chief Executive, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board said: Short films such as 'Coda' can create major international opportunities for young Irish filmmakers and animators. 'Coda' is the culmination of two years of painstaking work by a small team of dedicated animation artists and I really want to take this opportunity to congratulate Alan and the team behind this film for getting this far in the race for an Academy Award nomination.'

Directed by Alan Holly (‘Old Fangs’), ‘Coda’ is the culmination of two years’ work by a small team of dedicated animation artists. The film tells the story of a lost soul who stumbles drunkenly through the city. In a park, death finds him and shows him many things. The animated film from And Maps And Plans studio is produced by Ciaran Deeney.

The nine-minute, hand-drawn animation is voiced by Brian Gleeson (‘Standby’) and Orla Fitzgerald (‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley’).

‘Coda’ was produced under the Frameworks animation scheme which is funded by the IFB, RTÉ and the Arts Council.

Other key members of production from And Maps And Plans are Rory Byrne, Ronan Mc Meel, Shane Holly, Adrien Merigeau and Eoghan Dalton.

The Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting at screenings held in New York and Los Angeles. Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles on the short list. Screenings will be held in Los Angeles, London, New York and San Francisco in December.

The 87th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The Oscars ceremony will be telecast from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 22, 2015.

Another film to make the shortlist is ‘Footprints’ by Bill Plympton who was special guest animator at this year’s Dublin Animation Film Festival. Check out IFTN’s interview with Plympton here.
