‘Ellie the Ace’ Flies High
26 Sep 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Cartoon Saloon, best-known as the studio behind Tomm Moore’s Oscar-nominated and IFTA award-winning feature ‘The Secret of Kells,’ is currently developing animated series ‘Ellie the Ace.’ The €4.5 million series project was pitched this week at Cartoon Forum in Toulouse, France.

Cartoon Saloon’s Paul Young, Nora Twomey and Louise Bagnall presented ‘Ellie the Ace’ at the forum and it has garnered solid buzz from participants. The Cartoon Forum is a unique event focusing on pitching sessions of pre-selected TV projects where animation producers can find cross-border partners and speed up financial arrangements.

‘Ellie the Ace’ was among nine Irish projects to be chosen at this year’s event.

‘Ellie the Ace’ is directed and created by Bagnall, who last worked on the animation of ‘Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja’ and collaborated on the character design of ‘The Secret of Kells.’ The action-packed series follows an adventurous and endearing 10 year old girl who flies across the floating islands of Lockhart and makes friends along the way.

Cartoon Saloon is in advanced negotiations with RTÉ and with Disney for multiple territories. Both Disney and RTÉ sponsored the show to allow it to be pitched at Cartoon Forum. The series is also being conceived as a multi-platform property for mobile, TV, tablet, and internet.

“‘Ellie the Ace’ has a retro feel that’s not old-fashioned. It’s a very energetic show that boys and girls can connect to; and Ellie is a rare character in TV,” said Beth Gardiner, VP of original programming and development at the Walt Disney Co., EMEA. “This show really conveys a sense of adventure and a depth of storytelling.”

Moore’s follow-up to ‘Secret of Kells,’ ‘Song of the Sea,’ which Cartoon Saloon is also producing, recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festical at ahich it was critically acclaimed. The feature will play this December at GKids’ New York Intl. Children’s Film Festival.
