San Francisco Irish Film Festival starts tomorrow
17 Sep 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
'Good Vibrations' opens the festival
The San Francisco Irish Film Festival (SFIFF) was founded in 2003, and last year celebrated its 10th anniversary. The festival takes place at Delancey Street Theatre and takes place from Thursday 18th September to Saturday 20th September.

SIFF presents the very best in contemporary Irish cinema, celebrating everything from features to documentaries to Irish language films. There is also an Irish short films programme.

The opening night reception, which will take place tomorrow evening, will be followed by a screening of Cathy Brady’s short film ‘Wasted’, about a woman who is forced to live back home with her mother but whose past haunts her. ‘Good Vibrations’, directed by Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, will be the opening night feature. The film tells the feel-good story of Terri Hooley, who opened a punk music store during the Troubles.

On Friday evening, there will be a special extended shorts program called ‘Short Stories, Tall Tales’, which will exhibit Irish shorts full of engaging stories and characters. Among the programme is the IFTA-winning ‘The Last Days of Peter Bergman’, Ian Fitzgibbon’s ‘Breakfast Wine’, the multi award-winning animation ‘The Missing Scarf’, the comical ‘The Ledge End of Phil (from Accounting)’, ‘The Weather Report’ starring Liam Cunningham’, and Troubles-set ‘Volkswagen Joe’.

A second programme of short animations, with the inclusion of children’s films, will be screened on Saturday 20th September in the afternoon. The free event will exhibit the works of the award-winning production company Brown Bag Films.

A documentary double bill is another highly-anticipated event of the final day of SIFF. ‘The Irish Pub’, which is directed by Alex Fegan and tells the stories of Irish publicans from around the country, will be screened alongside ‘Natural Grace’. The latter film is directed by Art O’ Briain, chronicles the life of traditional Irish music icon, Martin Hayes.

Last, ‘Gold’ directed by Niall Heery, will close the festival on Saturday evening. The comedy stars Maisie Williams, James Nesbitt and David Wilmott, who play members of a family reluctantly brought together again after many years. ‘Gold’ hits Irish cinemas on October 11th.
