‘Blind Date’ Headed for TV3
28 Aug 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Sony-owned indie Stellify Media is to remake ‘Blind Date’ for TV3. Radio and television presenter Lucy Kennedy will host the new show. The commission is the first order for the Northern Irish indie, which was set up earlier this year by Kieran Doherty and Matt Worthy (read more here).

Sony owns the international rights to ‘The Dating Game’, the format that was originally produced in the US in 1965 and was later remade as ‘Blind Date’ for ITV, with Cilla Black as presenter. At the height of its popularity in the 1980s, 18.2 million tuned in on a Saturday night. The show ran from 1985 to 2003.

The 8 x 60-minute Irish version will be similar to the ITV series, where singles are given the chance to meet their true love through a number of questions, while separated by a wall. Once a partner is chosen, the pair will goes on a holiday – which could range from a fishing boat in Dingle to the beaches of the Algarve.

The series will be co-produced with TV3’s 3Studios and will be filmed at the company’s Sony HD studio in Dublin. The latter already houses STV-produced ‘The Lie’ and RDF TV co-production ‘Sitting On A Fortune’.

‘Blind Date’ (w/t) is to launch later this year as part of TV3’s autumn schedule, and following adaptations of ‘Gogglebox’ and ‘The Great British Bake Off’.

Stellify’s Doherty expressed delight to have secured its first commission five months after launch, and stated: “Blind Date is exactly the type of entertainment programming we want to produce – a compelling mix of humour, love and jeopardy.”

TV3 head of development and formats Andrew Byrne said: “We have been working on a number of new dating formats as part of our continued development of 3Studios and ‘The Dating Game’ format was simply too hard to resist. For us, this is the ultimate global dating show – and one that we can bring a unique Irish flavour to.”
