Training Ireland, has announced that Fionnula Flanagan will be delivering this year’s Actors Masterclass. The Fleadh’s Casting Masterclass will be presented by Ros and John Hubbard of Hubbard Casting.
Fionnula Flanagan has worked extensively both on stage and screen with many appearances on Broadway. These include ‘The Incomparable Max’, Mrs. Alving in Ibsen’s ‘Ghosts’ and Molly Bloom with Zero Mostel in the 1974 production of ‘Ulysses in Nighttown’ directed by Burgess Meredith, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award.
She is one of the few Irish actresses to make it in Hollywood, and her legacy spans five decades with roles in films as diverse as ‘The Guard’, ‘Waking Ned’, ‘Life’s a Breeze’ and ‘The Others’. She has also acted in TV productions ‘Lost’, ‘Brotherhood’ and ‘Defiance’. Fionnula is the only Irish actress to play guest roles on three different Star Trek series. She is the winner of two IFTAs and won the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
The Actors Masterclass will be hosted by John Hubbard of Hubbard Casting and will provide an intensive interactive environment in the skills, methodology and aesthetics of film acting aimed at actors working or wanting to work more in film. The masterclass will cover such topics as:
- Starting out as an actor
- Dealing with casting directors
- Securing an agent
- Preparing for an audition
- Working on set
- Relationship with the director, and many more
The masterclass costs €50 and will take place on Friday the 11th of July from 3pm – 6pm in the Radisson Hotel, Galway. Casting Director Ros Hubbard, who is from Dublin, set up Hubbard Casting with her husband John, who is from Norfolk, in 1976 and now works from their HQ in London and Dublin. In a career that has spanned over 30 years, the Hubbard’s most notable discoveries have included Orlando Bloom, whom they cast in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, Kate Winslet, and they currently have Aidan Turner and James Nesbitt starring in ‘The Hobbit’.
In addition to presiding with Alan Parker over the epic Irish casting process for ‘The Commitments’, the many notable recent Hubbard Casting credits include the upcoming ‘Dracula Untold’ for Universal and director Gary Shore, ‘Spy’ for director Paul Feig, ‘Sunset Song’ for Terence Davies and ‘Kajaki’. They are currently involved in casting a production from the Marian Keyes novel The Other Side of the Story with Michael Garland producing and Ian Fitzgibbon directing, and they are continuing to develop ‘Gods and Men’ for director Gary Shore.
Places on the casting workshop are limited – all successful applicants MUST bring an updated CV and headshot with them on the day, and have a monologue prepared and ready to perform (no longer than 1 minute). The Hubbards may choose to ‘spot pick’ performers as there may not be enough time for everyone to perform. Please note there is an age restriction on this workshop – applicants must be over 17 years of age and as old as they like!
